Lantaarntjes...
Fijne zondag!
Look, the center of the Lantern Festival quilt is finished. I only need to add the border and then I can start quilting. I think this will be a nice project for this Sunday.
Have a nice Sunday!

Willow Cottage...
I promised to show you the final result of the May Mini Quilt, but Thijs is a bit in the way. He loves to sit on my projects, and since this didn't come in handy, I gave him his own quilt to sit on. And look how satisfied he looks :o)
De hoekblokken waren nog wat saai. Wat bloemetjes zouden het geheel zeker opvrolijken.
The corner blocks looked a bit dull, and I thought some flowers would cheer the quilt up.
So I put everything aside again, took some ecru fabric and embroidery thread, and added a flower to each corner. Mostly, my design is completely finished before I start working on a quilt, and I almost never change it, but in this case I thought the flowers would add more charm to the quilt.
While basting the layers of the quilt, I always get a helping hand from Thijs. But I prefer him to watch from the side instead of sitting on my quilt ;o)
I use a curved needle to baste. This way, the needle comes up again automatically. Previously, I hated basting, but with the curved needle, it's not longer such a dreadfull job to do.
As usual, I drew several quilting lines on the top. I never know what to draw before I start, so most of them are wrong, but they will all be washed out once the quilt is finished.
Nog even de ophanglussen eraan en... klaar!
I only need to attach the hanging sleeves and... finished!
The quilt is called Willow Cottage, and it measures 32 cm x 36 cm. I already have quite a pile of mini quilts, but I love to decorate my house with them. I think this one is perfect for the Summer!
Happy stitching!

Patronen schrijven...
Each month, Mams and I write one or more patterns for Ellie's Quiltplace. One for our web shop, one for the Mini Quilt Club,...
It may sound easy, writing a pattern, but you're wrong. We know how to make the quilt we've designed, but explaining each step on paper is something totally different! After all, we do want all of our patterns to have clear instructions, so even beginning quilters can make them.
When writing our first patterns, it was a process of trial and error. How do you explain this, and how do you write that? We spent many hours writing and re-writing, untill everything was correct and clear.
But after a while, we found a quite simple solution to the writing problem: we design a quilt, write the instructions and then make the quilt, following our own instructions. This way, we can check if everything is clear, correct and complete, while working on the quilt.
The only thing I don't write down in advance, are the colors of DMC embroidery thread which I use in the stitcheries. Before I start working on a quilt I do choose the colors I want to use, but I only decide where to use which specific color and stitch while making the stitchery. While stitching, I write everything down and I sort it by color later.
When the pattern is finished, we read and re-read, untill it's exactly the way we want it to be: correct and clear! We make a picture of the finished quilt for the cover of the pattern, add the general instructions for basting, quilting and binding, and the patterns are ready to ship!
Fijne dag!
This was a small peek 'behind the scenes'. The quilt in the pictures is the May Mini Quilt. I'll show you the final result next time!

Op pad...
It was written in our agenda in capital letters: May 4, OEQC! Mams and I call it our yearly 'date', since we mark this day as a day for just the two of us.
After a 4 hour trip (really, I don't know why traveling by public transport services takes SO long!), I met Mams at the station of Genk and we left for Veldhoven (yes, another hour this time by car..., I sure wanted to visit that market ;o) )
We loved the exhibited quilts, especially the traditional and antique ones. We also admired the Egyptian quilts, which, from a distance, exactly look like tapestries.
We met old friends and new people, most of them we knew already through our blogs. It was very nice to meet you all 'in real life'!
Of course we didn't go home empty handed. I planned to behave, but I didn't... It's not my fault, the shops just offered too many nice things... ;o)
I bought some fabrics for my stash (whoops, didn't I try to diminish that...???), rusty bells, and some quilt templates. I was looking for those for quite some time, but I never found what I was looking for, so I was happy to find this stand filled with hundreds of different templates. I bought templates in several shapes and sizes, since they always come in handy. Mams also bought some nice fabrics, but she resisted to those temptations much better then I did.
To make a long story short: Mams and I had a great day. We even had fun afterwards, washing and ironing our new fabrics, and thinking of how to use them. They will sure be shown on our blog again, probably cut in pieces to make a new quilt...

Last weekend, Mams and I made another Pins & Needles pincushion. This time we chose blue, pink and cream fabrics. The pincushion is a gift for a friend of Mams, who's going to start her first quilt soon. We haven't had a chance to give it to her yet, but we hope she'll like it.
By the way, the story of how I came up with the idea of the pincushion-with-a-needle-flap is quite a funny one.
I was flipping through the pages of a patchwork magazine (not paying too much attention), when I thought saw something quite useful. 'Look how nice!' I told Mams. 'A pincushion-with-a-needle-flap!'. She took the magazine to take a closer look, shook her head and answered it was a quilted shopping bag (one you can carry in a smaller quilted case).
And so, by mistake, the idea of a pincushion-with-a-needle-flap was born. You see, sometimes a simple mistake can turn out quite usefull ;o)
Marike and Janet have send us pictures of their pincushions. Thanks for sharing ladies! Both pincushions are lovely. And look how lovely they look, made with different fabrics!
If you like to share a picture of your version of the Pins & Needles pincushion (or other quilts from our patterns), please send us an e-mail. We love to see your projects!
Groetjes,
Marike

'n Lentewandeling...
Recently my parents-in-law have bought an appartment near the sea and yesterday, we went for a visit. We went for a walk in the inland, on the Kemmelberg.
Between the trees on the hilltop thousands of hyacinths were in bloom. It was an amazing sight...
... as well as the view from the hill. The yellow fields are actually meadows, filled with lots of dandelions.
The grapes on the southside of the hill still have to start growing yet, but I'm sure they'll make a delicious wine later!
He hadden een heerlijke dag.
We had a lovely day. Too bad the weather is all rainy again, but we did enjoy this Spring day off in the sun!

Bijna...
One more block to go, and then I can finish the top of the Lantern Festival quilt. I have to start thinking about a quilting pattern... I would like to quilt it thoroughly, but I also want to finish the quilt before this Summer...
Hmz... a quilter's dilemma... ;o)

Over een lange-termijn-tussendoortje en een stapel post...
Yesterday, I finished the first part of my long-term-in-between-project. I have no idea yet of how I will combine the 4 stitcheries in 1 quilt. I guess inspiration will come when I finish the other stitcheries. I am sure though, that I will use the fabrics I showed previously. Well, I have 3 more seasons to come up with an idea ;o)
Fijne dag!
But first, Mams and I have to make a trip to the post office, because a huge pile of envelopes is waiting to be send. We hope Postman Pat will do his job quickly, so everyone who ordered a copy of the Pins & Needles pincushion pattern can get started soon!
Have a nice day!

Herinneringen...
Last weekend was busy, but nice. I had 2 reunion parties, the first one with a former colleague, the second one with my friends from 'kot' (kot is the Flemish word for a student lodge). I especially loved seeing my old kot-friends again. I hadn't seen some of them in over 6 years, but it felt like not a day has passed since we had last seen each other. We talked about things we had done and things we remembered. It's nice to see how everyone has kept his or her own memories and how they all make our kot-history. Some big things, but mostly small things that made our memories and our friendship so special.
I remember how we lived with 8 people in 1 house, often with 5 or 6 different nationalities and languages. We spoke English most of the time, but of course, the other students had to learn Dutch as well. Therefore, we'd put small notes all around the house, telling them the Dutch word of the item the notes were stuck on. But the next day, someone had added the English word, and then someone the French, ... The kitchen-note soon looked like this:
keuken
kitchen
cuisine
cucina
(and the Arabic word for kitchen, which none of us could read...)
The kitchen-note was quite usefull, but I think some other notes were less informative:
radio
radio
radio
radio
(en opnieuw iets in het Arabisch, LOL)
It are these small things we all captured and it was good to see my friends again. Back home, I sew some pyramids to the 6th row. Blocks, containing fabrics I used in quilts that I made while I lived in the room in the attic of our kot, teaching 2 of my friends how to quilt. I'm sure those lovely memories will never fade.
