Zaterdag uitslaapdag...

Kleine, medium of grote quilts?

Apparently, Thijs doesn't care as long as it's soft and warm, but what do you prefer? Small medium or large quilts?

I promised to show you the progress on my pyramid quilt. I can't believe that, with almost all blocks cut, I still have so many scraps left! I can make at least 4 other bed sized quilts out of them. Can you imagine?!

The leftovers from my latest quilt, Shades of Summer, will be used in some of the new pyramid blocks. Well, at least the sashing and border fabrics. The fabrics used in the blocks were from a Charm Pack and even though I love these pre-cuts, I do regret that from this one there's not even a tiny piece of fabric left to use in my scrap quilt. I guess everything has it's pros and cons. I did have leftovers from some of the Charm Pack fabrics I used in the Tuscan Mosaic, so a little bit of Tuscan sun is sewn into the pyramid quilt as well.

Fijne dag!

Speaking of sun, I really enjoy the lovely, slightly cooler weather. A rain shower every now and then is highly appreciated by the plants in my garden (I'll neglect the fast growing weeds for now!) and the sunshine and agreable temperatures are appreciated by me :o)

Have a nice day!

Last minute quiltje...

About 2 years ago, I decided to not just start new projects, but to finish some 'old ones' too. I still amaze myself that I keep up with this good intention so well - mostly, I forget about them just a few weeks after New Year's Day. Now that there are some new projects, like the Angel, in my project baskets, I filled the last empty one with a UFO.

You might remember this quilt, because the pattern was a gift with your Christmas order last year. My family already knows me for having last minute ideas and too little time to work them out, and this sure is an example of that. I came up with the idea for a gift just a few days before we started our Christmas in July sale, and I hadn't enough time to design and finish the project in time. To make sure we could send the pattern, I only finished the top.

Since I really love this mini quilt, I definately don't want it to be left unfinished, especially not because it only needs some quilting and a binding to finish it. Wouldn't it be nice if I could hang it this Christmas? I guess this weekend, one of the quilt preperations I'll be doing, is to baste this quilt, so I can quilt it next week.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Nieuwe blokjes...

I noticed that, eventhough I'm working on the quilt for over 5 years now, these tiny Dear Jane blocks keep fascinating me. Not only the designs, which are lovely, but also why Jane choose these specific designs, what she thought while making the blocks,...

Three new blocks are finished: I-12 Fred's Square Fair, K-12 Doris's Dilemma and J-12 Rebecca's Basket (which I will show you later).

Fijn weekend!

While I'm stitching away, Mams is not doing any quilting at all for the moment. She has had a surgery for her gallbladder last Wednesday. She's home again, but she's been very sick from the surgery and the narcosis. ZusJe and Rick are taking care of her, and I do hope she will recover soon!

Have a nice weekend!

Net zoals Jane...

In between finishing the top of my snowman quilt, I took my block book and started sewing the next blocks of my Dear Jane quilt. Now that I've started working on it again, I don't want to loose the good vibes ;o)

Some of the patterns in the book are different from the original blocks, like block G-12 Gloriae. I like to make my quilt look as much as possible like the orginal one, so I changed the pattern to look like Janes block. This time, I think it only made the block easier to sew (no, it's not appliquéd!) then as given in the book. Therefore, Gloriae was finished in no time.

The same applies for block H-12, Hannah Lou's Hearts. Jane didn't appliqué hearts, but 'drops', which together look like hearts. I love this green fabric and it looks great in this block.

Fijne zondag!

Just one more block to go, before it's time for, what I think is one of the most interesting block in the quilt...

Have a nice Sunday!

Another quilt I'm preparing this weekend, is my snowman quilt.

The scrappy border turned out just fine. It gives the quilt this cozy, wintery look. But the top is not yet finished. I designed a lovely appliqué border which will add more charm to the quilt.

Fijn weekend!

So today I will take out my fabrics again, cut the templates and iron the appliqué parts to the second border. Again some preparations to be done... a perfect way to spend my Saturday!

Have a nice weekend!

Tuscan Mosaic...

From Tuscany on to my newest quilt...
I started working on my 'vacation quilt' in June during a trip to France. I wanted something small to bring. Something I could easily pick up and put away again. Something that wouldn't hang on the soil while working on it outside. Just a lovely, small project.

The fabrics I chose are from a Moda Charm Pack. I love to see these small fabrics turn into a beautiful quilt. I added an ecru background fabric, pink for the sashing and binding, and brown for the border. Here I told you how I wanted to add a red sashing, but now that the quilt is finished, I'm glad I went with the pink! It has such a cozy and warm antique look!

The centre of the quilt made me think of the many mosaics we saw in Italy, with it's many small tiles. And since I mainly worked on the quilt while in Tuscany, I thought 'Tuscan Mosaic' would be the perfect name for the quilt.

Several of you have asked for the pattern of this quilt, which is available in our web shop. If you're a member of our newsletter, you can order with the special newsletter member discount. The pattern has clear instructions and diagrams on making the quilt, as well as real sized templates, which makes it a perfect project for beginning quilters as well.

Here's one more close up of the quilt. I always think designing a quilt with small fabrics like those from a Charm Pack is quite a challenge, but I love how this one turned out and I'm proud of the result! I already designed some more quilts with Charm Packs. Patterns can be found in our web shop. Just look for the sign 'uses 1 Charm Pack'.

Have a great evening!

Just a few more stitches before my vacation quilt will be an AFFO...

Quilthulpje...

Now that the top of the quilt is finished, it's time to draw the quilting patterns. Usually I take out all my tableware to draw some nice motives, but this time I thought a circle in each block would be enough. Mostly I think the more quilt stitches, the nicer it looks, but this quilt somehow doesn't need to much quilting. Thijs, my wonderful quilt help, is watching closely (not to say with his nose right on top of it) what 'his human' is doing. I'm not sure if he understands my love for fabrics, but he sure shares my love for quilts!

For the borders I copied a pattern from the book '501 quilting motifs' from That Patchwork Place which contains many great quilt patterns. If you're thinking of buying a quilt pattern book, I really would advise this one. I scanned the pattern, printed it in the right size and then laminated it. Mams tried this method on the Summer Memories quilt (the heart pattern, which you can see on the 3rd picture) and it worked just fine. The stencils are cut with a double bladed cutter, which is normally used to make doll houses, but which works perfect for making stencils too. I need to practice a bit on the curves, but, for a first attempt, it's not too bad at all.

After drawing the patterns, it's time to baste. Eventhough it's quite uncomfortable, I prefer to baste small quilts on the floor, since it's just the fastest way for me to finish this job. And while I'm sitting on the ground with sour knees and feeling 90 years old instead of just 27, Thijs is testing if this quilt too will be soft enough for one of his cat naps... I love my little help :o)

Last Saturday I woke up early. Armed with a book, some patchwork and a thermos full of tea, I took the bus at 6.30 h. and the train at 7.43 h. to arrive in Genk 1.5 h. later. There Mams and Rick where waiting for me. First we dropped off Rick at 'Talentenschool', where he had a special class called 'Mad Science'. By the look of his face when we picked him up, he had a great time!

In the afternoon we visited The Log Cabin's Open Door Days, where we met up with Carin and Michiel again. Rick loved playing games with Michiel on the terrace and Carin, Mams and I bought new fabrics - some needed, some just because they were irresistable ;o)

Happy quilting!

On my way to Mams I had almost finished the top of my vacation quilt and I needed fabric for the sashing, binding and backing. When designing the quilt, I thought a red sashing and binding would be just perfect. Jacqueline had a lot of lovely red fabrics in store, but none of them was 'the perfect one' for the quilt. After some tips from Mams and Jacqueline I finally agreed on a salmon pink fabric. I needed some time to get used to the pink instead of the red I had in mind, but now it's in the top, it looks just perfect!
I will show you my other purchases later...

Happy quilting!

't Vakantiequiltje...

Now it's about time that I tell you about my 'vacation quilt'. You might remember I started this quilt last June, because I needed a project to work on while staying in the Provence. Something small, which I could easily bring where ever I went.

I finished almost half of the blocks when we stayed in France and didn't touch it after, so I could work on it again in Italy the past 2 weeks. Here I'm sitting on the bed, assembling the top (legs up after a long cycling tour through the Tuscan hills :o) )

All 36 blocks are finished and I even almost finished the centre of the top. Just one more row to go before I can add the border. Here, a part of the top is enjoying the lovely view from our hotel room. And I don't blame it, because the view was amazing! The lovely old city of Siena, bathing in sunlight. Too bad we couldn't take the view home ;o)

Here's one last picture of the quilt. It loved hanging there, in the Tuscan sun. Too bad sun isn't that good for the color of the fabrics! It was good for the color of my skin though and I did enjoy it a lot ;o)
