Op naar... het Hobby Salon!

Het laatste weekend van februari (ja, de tijd vliegt!) ging ik met een aantal quilts, een stapel patronen en een project om aan te werken op weg naar Antwerpen. 's Morgens vroeg is dat maar een half uurtje met de auto, dus prima te doen.
Ik was door Lisette van Calico House uitgenodigd om in haar stand op het Hobby Salon mijn quilts te laten zien, patronen te verkopen en het quilten te demonstreren aan iedereen die nieuwsgierig was naar 'het getover met lapjes' ;o)

The last weekend of February (yes, time flies!) I packed some of my quilts, a pile of patterns and a project to work on, and went on my way to Antwerp. Early in the morning that's just about 30 minutes by car, so really not that far from here.
I was invited by Lisette from Calico House, to display my quilts in her booth at the Hobby Salon, to sell my patterns and to demonstrate quilting to all who were curious about the 'fabric magic' we did ;o)

Hier is mijn 'stand'. Ik had besloten om onder meer Mams haar Dresden Star mee te nemen, vanwege de mooie antieke uitstraling van die quilt. Het is een quilt waar we samen aan gewerkt hebben. Nou ja, ik heb het blok ontworpen en Mams heeft alle rest gedaan ;o) Het is één van die quilts die ik ooit zelf ook nog eens wil maken.
De quilts in het midden en rechts op de foto zijn van Mary en Muriel en zijn gemaakt tijdens de Open Ateliers bij Calico House. Zijn ze niet prachtig?

Here's my 'booth'. I decided to bring Mams' Dresden Star quilt to hang, because I love the antique look. It's a quilt we worked on together. Well, I designed the blocks, and Mams did everything else ;o) It's one of those quilts I would love to make myself one day too. 
The quilts in the middle and on the right are made by Mary and Muriel during the Open Ateliers at Calico House. Aren't they beautiful?

Ik kreeg gezelschap van een aantal dames die deelnamen aan de Open Ateliers. Het was een eerste kennismaking, maar met een gemeenschappelijk hobby heb je altijd wel iets om over te babbelen. Het was fijn hen te leren kennen.

I got accompanied by some lovely ladies who joined the Open Ateliers. I hadn't met them before, but with a shared passion, there's always something to talk about, and it was really nice to get to know them all.

De dames waren allemaal aan andere projecten bezig. Ik vind het altijd leuk om te zien hoe ieder op zijn manier de kleuren en stoffen kiest, hoe iedereen weer een andere manier heeft om te spelden en naaien,... Je bent nooit te oud om te leren en je haalt overal weer ideeën en inspiratie uit!

They were all working on different projects. I love to see how everyone has her own way of choosing colors and fabrics, of sewing an pinning the fabrics together,... One is never too old to learn and I always get inspired!

Naast heel veel babbelen, hebben we ook best nog wat steekjes gemaakt.

Besides of course a lot of chatting, many stitches were made by all. 

Het was leuk dat er best wat mensen, die nog niet eerder gequilt hadden, het quiltavontuur wilden aangaan en een eerste project wilden starten. Sommigen startten met iets kleins, zoals het Pins & Needles speldenkussen, anderen gingen meteen voor een grotere uitdaging: de Dresden Star.
Ons nieuwe patroon 'Sparkle' viel eveneens goed in de smaak.

It was nice to see that quite a few people who were new to quilting, decided to join the quilting adventure and start their first project. Some started with a small project, like the Pins & Needles pincushion, others immediately went for a more challenging project: the Dresden Star.
Our new pattern 'Sparkle' was also very popular.

Bedankt Lisette, voor de uitnodiging en twee hele leuke dagen. We moeten dit zeker nog eens doen!

Eindelijk... tijd voor een verhaaltje!

Volgens mij was dit de langste blogpauze die ik in 8 jaar bloggen heb gehad... Nee, ik was jullie niet vergeten, maar ik was zo druk met vanalles dat ik niet eens tijd had om erover te vertellen. Gelukkig waren die drukke dingen wel allemaal leuke dingen - meestal zelfs quiltgerelateerd - zoals mijn bezoekje aan De Potterije vorig weekend.

This was probably the longest blog-pause in 8 years that I've blogging... No, I haven't forgotten you, but I've been so busy that I just didn't have time to tell you about it. Luckily all busy things were good things - mostly even quilt-related - like my visit to De Potterije last weekend. 

De Potterije in Lokeren is een quiltwinkel én een bloemenwinkel in één. Wat een geweldig leuke combinatie! En vorig weekend, waren alle klanten nog eens extra welkom op de Open Dagen, waar ook onze patronen werden geïntroduceerd.

De Potterije in Lokeren (Belgium) is a quilt shop as well as a flower shop. Such a lovely combination! And last weekend, they welcomed all customers at the Open House, where our patterns were introduced.

Enkele van onze quilts waren tentoongesteld, zoals Maggie's Cottage Garden, die je hierboven ziet. Ik kreeg meteen zin om thuis ook zoveel bloemen en planten neer te zetten, want wat ziet het er gezellig uit! Maar het is al een hele uitdaging om de paar plantjes die ik heb in leven te houden, dus misschien moet ik toch maar niet te ambitieus worden op dat vlak ;o)

A couple of our quilts were on display, like Maggie's Cottage Garden which you can see in the above picture. I immediately felt the urge to bring more flowers and plants into my own home, because the quilts combined with the many flowers and spring bulbs looked so cozy, but then again, keeping the few plants I have alive is already quite a challenge to me, so maybe I should not be too ambitious ;o)

En hier hangt nog één van mijn quilts, Bella Notte, één van mijn favoriete quilts omdat er sterren én ronde vormen in zitten!

Maar natuurlijk was er nog veel meer te zien dan alleen mijn quilts. Zoals deze schattige seizoenenquiltjes...

Of course there was much more to be seen then just my quilts. Like these cute seasonal quilts...

Oh, en zei ik al dat ze er VEEL mooie stoffen hebben? Netjes in Fat Quarters gesneden...

Oh, and did I mention MANY beautiful fabrics? Cut into Fat Quarters...

En de patronen? Die vlogen buiten! Na 4 dagen was het mandje zo goed als leeg. Er waren nog maar een paar patronen over. Sommige waren zelfs op de eerste ochtend al uitverkocht! Gelukkig schreef Marleen voor iedereen de bestelling op, zodat niemand teleurgesteld werd.

Fijne zondag! Ik ga een kijkje nemen op de Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle. Misschien zie ik je daar wel!

And the patterns? They were an absolute succes! After 4 days, the basket was as good as empty. Only few patterns were left. Some were even sold out already on the first morning! Luckily, Marleen wrote down the orders, so no one was dissappointed.

'n Speciaal blokje...

Terwijl ik piramides aan elkaar aan het zetten was, kwam ik dit speciale blok tegen. Op het eerste zicht is er niks bijzonders aan deze piramide. Net als de andere piramides, is hij gemaakt van restjes van andere quilts, en doet hij me terugdenken aan de quilts die ik heb gemaakt.

While sewing the pyramid blocks together, I came across a very special block. At first sight, there's nothing unusual or different about this pyramid. Just like the others, it contains scraps from other quilts, reminding me of the quilts I've made.

De onderste laag is een mooie bruine stof van Moda (net als alle andere lagen trouwens, dat is toeval). Het is een mooie gestreepte bruine stof van de serie Beach House. Ik heb hem gebruikt in een van mijn favoriete quilts, 'Ode To Simplicity'. Ondanks het eenvoudige patroon van deze quilt, hou ik er echt van en hang ik hem elke zomer weer op. Het middendeel heb ik met de festonsteek geappliceerd en de Log Cabins in de rand geven de quilt een antieke uitstraling. Trouwens, het stofje dat ik voor de bloemen heb gebruikt, vind ik echt ontzettend lelijk. Het is een soort bruin, met allemaal gekleurde bloemen erop. Maar, het past heel goed in het geheel van de quilt en ik denk dat het juist dat lelijke stofje is dat de quilt zoveel uitstraling geeft!

The bottom layer is a lovely brown fabric from Moda (just like all other layers, which really is a coincidence). It's a lovely striped brown from the Beach House series. I've used it in one of my favorite quilts, 'Ode To Simplicity'. Despite the simple pattern, I really love this quilt and I display it each Summer. The appliquéd centre is made with a blanket stitch, and the Log Cabin border gives the quilt an antique look. By the way, I think the fabric I used for the flowers is really, really ugly. It's some sort of brown with different colored flowers on it. But, it does fit in very well in this quilt and I think it's this ugly fabric that gives the quilt this beautiful look!

De tweede laag is een groene stof, van de Patisserie serie van Fig Tree. Ik heb hier meters van gekocht, want ik heb hem gebruikt in de 'Île aux Fleurs Collectie'. Ik heb er stelen van gemaakt, randen, afwerkbiezen en een kussen en nog had ik stof over! Nu krijgen de restjes een plaatje in mijn 'herinneringenquilt'.

The second layer is a green fabric, from the Patisserie series by Fig Tree. I've bought a lot of this fabric, since I used it for the 'Île aux Fleurs - Collection' quilts. I've used it for stems, borders, bindings and pillows, and I still have fabric left! Now, this one also gets a place in my 'quilt of memories'.

De middelste laag is een mooie stof die ik in 2008 kocht (dat is alweer 4 jaar geleden, wat gaat de tijd toch snel!). Als ik het goed herinner, is het een kerststof, maar met de groene blaadjes en besjes, vind ik dat hij eigenlijk voor elk seizoen gebruikt kan worden. Ik heb hem gebruikt in 'Flora's Secret', één van de eerste quilts die ik maakte met stitchery. Ondanks dat het niet eenvoudig was om alle steekjes goed te krijgen (ik had vooral problemen met de platsteek - dat is niet mijn favoriet...), raakte ik toch behoorlijk verslaafd aan stitchery!

The middle layer is a lovely fabric which I bought back in 2008 (wow, that's already 4 years ago, time flies!). If I remember well, it's actually a Christmas fabric, but with the green leaves and berries, I think it fits well for every season. I used this fabric in 'Flora's Secret', one of the first quilts I made using the stitchery technique. Although I was not easy to get all the stitches right at once (I did have some problems with the satin stitch - it's not my favorite...), I did get hooked on stitchery!

De vierde laag is een restje van mijn kerstquilt 'Joyful', die ik heb gemaakt van een Charm Pack. Het is een rare kleur, een soort vuil ecru, en ik zou hem absoluut niet hebben gekocht als ik er niet een specifiek project voor in gedachten had, maar eigenlijk past hij heel goed bij de andere stoffen (zowel in de Joyfull als in deze piramide).

The fourth layer of fabric is a scrap from a Christmas quilt, called 'Joyful', which I made from a Charm Pack. It's a strange color, some sort of dirty ecru, which I definately wouldn't buy without a specific project in mind, but it does fit in well with the other colors (both in the Joyfull quilt as in this pyramid).

En tot slot de top van deze piramide. Die is gemaakt van een restje van de Garden Angel pakketten. Het is een mooi, helderrode stof, met kleine donkerrode takjes erop. Het is prachtig en het brengt wat kleur in de quilt.

And finally the top of this pyramid is made from some leftover fabric from the Garden Angel kits. It's a lovely, bright red fabric, with tiny dark red twigs on it. It's gorgious and it does brighten up the quilt.

Maar wat is er nu zo speciaal aan dit blok? Je weet misschien nog wel dat ik in Frankrijk aan deze quilt ben begonnen. De eerste blokken werden gemaakt aan de voet van een heel speciale berg, die hoog boven de omringende heuvels uitsteekt. De Mont Ventoux kon daarom niet ontbreken in mijn quilt. Van beneden naar boven hebben we eerst een laag aarde, gevolgd door een laag bomen. Verder naar boven zijn er struiken te vinden die, hoe hoger je komt, steeds zeldzamer worden. De top van de berg lijkt een soort maanlandschap, met lichtbruine rotsen en vanwege het microklimaat groeien er bijna geen plantjes meer. En dan hebben we het rode driehoekje. Dat symboliseert het weerstation met zijn rood-witte mast, dat helemaal op de top van de berg staat.

Now, what's so special about this block? You might remember I started working on my pyramid quilt in France. The first blocks were made at the the foot of a very special mountain, rising high above the surrounding hills. The Mont Ventoux therefore couldn't miss in my quilt. Bottom up, the mountain/block starts with a layer of earth at the bottom, then green trees, followed by bushes that become more rare when you climb higher and higher. The top looks like a moon landscape: it's covered in light brown rocks, and because of the micro climate, almost no plants grow here. And then finally, the red triangle in my block represents the weather station, which is on the top of the mountain and has a high, red and white mast.

De andere piramideblokken zijn willekeurig samengesteld, maar ik vond dat dit blok niet kon ontbreken in mijn quilt. Het is een herinnering aan hoe ik deze quilt begon, en ik wil deze herinnering, samen met alle andere, bewaren.

While all other blocks are assembled at random, I do think this block can't miss in my quilt. It's a memory of how I started this quilt and I want to keep this special memory along with the others.

Nu ga ik weer verder met wat willekeurig samengestelde blokken! Ik heb nu ongeveer 3/4 van de blokken af, dus het is hoog tijd om er weer een paar aan elkaar te zetten.

Now on with some randomly chosen blocks! I've finished almost 3/4 of the blocks, so it's time to sew some more blocks to the top.
