Op naar de Sint Jorisstraat...

Sint Jorisstraat 34, Den Bosch.

Sint Jorisstraat 34, Den Bosch, The Netherlands. Wietske and Herman's shop, Bossche Quilts en meer, was the destination of my trip last Saturday. We met a couple of years ago, in their temporary shop in the living room since the official shop was still being build, and we have always kept in touch.

Ten ladies arrived at the cozy shop - some left home really early to be in time, because they came all the way from Rotterdam and The Hague - and they all were ready for a lovely day filled with quilts, inspiration and fun.

We started with a Show & Tell. From the very first quilt I made when I was only 10 years old untill the Switch! and of course the quilts I made from our own fabric collection. Thats almost 22 years of 'quilting history' in about two hours!

After all quilts were admired we enjoyed a delicious lunch, presented by Wietske with help of Patricia and Louisette, who had only little time to enjoy the Show & Tell, because the shop was crowded with customers.

In the afternoon it was time to get to work on the Past & Present - Placemat. Fusible webbing appliqué finished with a blanket stitch, making a biais and the 3-d flower heart... the ladies did enjoy it a lot!

I was way too busy explaining and I totally forgot to take pictures. Luckily Wietske and friends took many photo's and Wietske collected them in a lovely story (click).

We planned on going to the AEF Pro fair in Paris yesterday, but because Thijsje is still not well, we decided to stay at home. Because he has weakened from the hypo and the hernia, the fluid on his lungs (pleural effusion), which we could control, is causing shortness of breath again. He has to put all his energy in something that seems so evident...  He's lying on the couch exhausted all day long, he hasn't eaten for a week and he's only drinking some water every now and then... Together with the vet, we keep a close eye on him, but we're still very worried.

Fijne dag!

Today I have a day off and besides taking care of Thijsje, I'm planning to send the February newsletter, which, with everything that has been going on, is a bit later then usual.

Hava a nice day!

Eindelijk?

Last Thursday I spend the holiday well by working a bit in our house and garden. I cleaned, washed, did some odd jobs and worked a bit in the garden. I just had taken the laundry inside when rain came pouring down. Even though I would have loved to enjoy the sunshine a bit longer, I was releived it finally rained. You could see the plants and trees enjoy the water! When the sun came back, our garden looked bright green in contrast with the dark grey sky.

Inside I spend my time well, working on the Holliedollie quilt. You might remember I last wrote about it in January, when I said is was almost finished. Well, 'almost finished' requires some action before it turns into 'completely finished' and I haven't seen to have come to that. So I took out the quilt, finished the quilting and added noses to the dogs. They do look like dogs now, instead of dresses ;o)

Fijn weekend!

The only thing left to do is to add the hanging sleeves, finish the binding and add a label of course. I promised myself that this time I won't lay it aside untill it's really finished!

Have a nice weekend!

Hoe gaat het met...

... de Holliedollie quilt?

How are things with the Holliedollie quilt?

Prima!

Fine! The quilt is almost quilted and when at Mams' this weekend, I added the binding to the top of the quilt (I don't like doing this by hand, so I used Mams' sewing machine. I know, the binding should be added at the end of the process, but because I basted tightly, there's no harm in binding it now).

Fijne dag!

Soon, after about 9 years, this quilt will be an AFFO (A Finaly Finished Object)!
Have a nice day!

Zomaar ineens...

All of a sudden, it happens that the Holliedollie quilt is in the hoop, ready to be quilted.

Fijne dag!

Once I got over the idea that the borders wouldn't look nice, I sort of 'put the turbo on' and finished the top. The first cat block is quilted, the blue-dog-with-the-small-pink-hearts is next. Who knows, maybe this quilt, which I started 9 years ago, will be quilted before the end of the year!

Have a nice day!

Holliedollie-nieuws...

It's been a while, but today, a 'Holliedollie update'.

Making the scrappy borders didn't go the way I wanted. It felt like I didn't make any progress and I wasn't sure these colorful fabrics would match well once placed right next to each other...

So I put the project aside, because sometimes it's better to just lay it aside for a while then to keep on doubting about it. But yesterday I reminded myself that my scrappy pyramid quilt is full of illogic fabric combinations and that turns out well too, so I picked up the Holliedollie quilt again.

Fijne dag!

And so it came that 3 scrappy borders were sewn and attached to the top. Here's a little sneak peek. Don't you just love how it turns out? I definitely do!
Have a nice day!

'Restjesstroken'...

Fijne dag!

I'm sure it's much faster when sewn by machine, but I love joining these patches by hand!
Have a nice day!

(All pictures are made with the loving help of Thijs, who's always present when I take my camera :o) )

The Holliedollie quilt top has this lovely, scrappy look, which will be continued in the border. I've been cutting small strips which will be joined randomly around the center of the quilt later.

But this scrappy look is actually not scrappy at all, since the quilt is made from Fat Quarters and a newly bought ecru fabric for the background. You see, when I started this quilt, I didn't have so much scraps, just a few tiny pieces saved for a snowman's nose or a scarf,... And so I carefully selected (new and unused) Fat Quarters from my stash to make the cats and dogs.

Fijne dag!

Now, about 9 years later, I have many, many scraps and I'm creating even more by finishing this quilt. It's a funny contradiction, but it adds another nice story to the Holliedollie quilt.

Happy, scrappy day!

Nine years ago, I moved to Antwerp, to study history at the university. Everything was new for me: another country, staying at my 'kot' (student room), getting to know the Belgian educational system and getting used to the Antwerp dialect, which at first I really didn't understand at all...

During the evenings I was happy to do something familiar: I worked on a patchwork project! I started a new quilt, with cats and dogs, made from fabrics from my stash. Between studying and enjoying life as a student, I made almost all of the blocks, but somehow the quilt ended up as a UFO.

Last week, all of a sudden, I came across the cats and dogs quilt and I decided it had been a UFO for way too long. So I drew the last 4 blocks, cut the fabrics, and started sewing. While piecing the fabrics together, this quilt brought back so many memories of kot. Good ones - like the many friends I made, funny ones - like the time one of our roommates build a snowman in our refrigirator, and sad ones - like the first week, when I felt really homesick and I spend 20 euros calling Mams the first day, just to cry and say I missed her.

All of these memories are stitched into this quilt. A quilt that may not appear so special at first sight, but one that is very dear to me. Many things have happened over the passed 9 years and new memories will be stitched into the quilt now I'm finishing it. They don't need to be big stories or important memories. It are the details, the small things that make it so special.

Happy quilting!
