Placemats maken bij De Potterije...

Vorig weekend reed ik in een Renaultje vol quilts en patroontjes naar Lokeren, naar De Potterije, voor niet één, maar twee workshops van de Past & Present - Placemat!

Last weekend, I drove - with my Renault filled with quilts and patterns - to De Potterije in Lokeren (Belgium), for not one, but two Past & Present - Placemat classes!

De quiltsters kwamen al snel binnen. Sommigen moesten niet ver, anderen hadden er een flinke reis op zitten en hadden veel zin om met de Placemat aan de slag te gaan.

The quilters arrived one by one. Some lived close to the shop, others had made quite a trip to get there. All were thrilled to get started on the Placemat.

Ik had voor iedereen een patroontje mee en Marleen had stofpakketjes gemaakt.

I had brought a pattern for every student and Marleen everyone a kit.

Er werd druk gewerkt aan de bloem. Daarin komen twee applicatietechnieken aan bod en natuurlijk het 'bolletje' voor het hartje. Deze speciale techniek geeft een heel leuk effect en kan ook voor verschillende andere applicaties gemaakt worden, denk maar aan kerstballen of neusjes!

During the class we worked on the flower. It contains two different techniques to appliqué and of course, we learned all about the 'bulb' for the heart. This special, quirky technique can be used for other appliqué as well. Just think of Christmas bulbs or noses!

Tijdens de workshop werd er gezellig gebabbeld, maar naargelang de concentratie toenam werd het toch een beetje stiller ;o)

Everyone was chatting to her heart's content while making the flower and stem, but as we were more focussed on the bulb, it became more quiet ;o)

Tussen de workshops door was er tijd voor een lekker broodje en natuurlijk ook wat 'snuffeltijd' tussen de stapels prachtige stoffen!

In between the classes there was  time for a delicious sandwich and of course some time to look around the shop and the many beautiful fabrics!

Heel veel mooie grijze, rode, bruine, gele, groene, paarse en roze stoffen en natuurlijk ook onze eigen Past & Present collectie! Het is hier niet moeilijk om met een goed gevuld zakje met aankopen weer buiten te gaan ;o)

Marleen offers lots of beautiful greys, reds, browns, yellows, greens, purples and pinks and of course also our very own Past & Present collection! It's not difficult to leave here with a well filled shopping bag ;o)

Na de lunch staan de dames van de tweede groep al te trappelen om aan de slag te gaan.

After the break the ladies from the afternoon class are anxiously waiting to get started.

Terwijl iedereen een plaatsje zoekt en zich installeert worden ook de quilts die ik heb meegenomen uitgebreid bekeken. De Sparkle, de Nocturne met de 12 verschillende sterren en de kleine speldenkussentjes. Ook op de grote ronde blokken van mijn Carousel komen veel reacties. Of ik daar ook workshop in geef? Dat kan! Maar eerst zelf de quilt afmaken ;o)

While everyone is finding their seat there's time to tak a look at the quilts I brought. The Sparkle, the Nocturne with the 12 various star blocks and the tiny pincushions. Many also love the large circles from my Carousel quilt. Will I be teaching a Carousel class? Yes, of course! But I have to finish my quilt first ;o)

En dan gaan we weer allemaal druk aan de slag. Er is veel verschil tussen de dames: sommigen hebben al jaaaaaren quiltervaring, voor anderen is het allemaal nog een beetje nieuw.

And then were off for the second class. Some of the students are very experienced quilters, others are (quite) new to it.

Maar weet je, dat is helemaal niet erg, want er is genoeg tijd om alles uit te leggen en iedereen te helpen. Bovendien is het leuk dat bij het afsluiten ook de ervaren dames vertellen dat ze vanalles hebben bijgeleerd!

That's not a problem at all, because I take plenty of time to explain everything and help everyone where needed. It's also nice to hear that even the experienced quilters have learned new trics!

Ook na de workshop kwamen er nog veel leuke en lieve reacties binnen. Verschillende dames hebben hun placemat al afgemaakt en lieten weten dat ze enorm genoten hadden van de les en helemaal geïnspireerd waren. Kortom: het was een super fijne dag!

Afterwards I received many sweet comments. Several ladies have already finished their placemat and they really enjoyed the class and were very much inspired. In short: it really was a great day!

Voor iedereen die er niet bij kon zijn: in september organiseert De Potterije weer haar Open Dagen. Vorig jaar waren die een enorm succes (klik). Ik zal er ook aanwezig zijn met mijn quilts en patronen en... onze nieuwe stoffencollectie! Ook plannen we samen komend najaar weer leuke workshops in.

Verwennerij bij De Potterije...

Na een aantal reisjes naar Nederland, stond er dit keer een Belgisch weekend op het programma.

After a couple of trips to the Netherlands, this weekend was going to be a Belgian one.

Gisteren ging de rit westwaarts, over de Ring van Antwerpen - waar er voor een keer helemaal nergens file stond! - verder over de E17, naar De Potterije in Lokeren. Op de parking botste ik (gelukkig niet letterlijk) al meteen op Blanche Vandebroek, een fijn weerzien! 

Yesterday I drove westwards, passing the Antwerp ring road - this time without traffic jams! - and the E17 to De Potterije in Lokeren. On the parking I bumped (luckily not litteraly) into Blance Vandebroek, a happy reunion.

Mand uit de auto, rekjes heb ik ook altijd mee en een hele stapel patronen. Oh, en de grote oude koffer, die moeten we niet vergeten, want daar zitten ook nog quilts in!

I brought a laundry basket full of quilts, some quilt stands and a pile of patterns. Oh, and the large old trunk of course, I can't forget that one, because it contains some quilts too!

Na een fijne ontvangst door Marleen en Dirk (om het op z'n Komen Eten's te zeggen: voor sfeer en gezelligheid een welverdiende 10!) heb ik me snel geïnstalleerd. Er kwam namelijk een gezellige groep dames om alles te leren over de Switch!

After a warm welcome by Marleen and Dirk, I installed my quilts and patterns, because a little while later, a group of lovely ladies was waiting to learn all about the Switch!

Je vraagt  je soms af waar de quiltsters allemaal vandaan komen, want het was een drukte van belang! (kijkje in de winkel - op m'n tenen - vanuit de lesruimte) Sommigen kwamen van dichtbij en konden te voet, anderen kwamen helemaal uit West-Vlaanderen of Antwerpen en hadden toch wel wat tijd (al dan niet quiltend) doorgebracht in de auto, bus of trein.

I sometimes wondered where all these quilters came from, because the shop was really crowded! (glimpse of the shop - standing on the tip of my toes - from the classroom) Some lived nearby, and walked to the shop, others came from West-Vlaanderen or Antwerp and had spend quite some time (quilting maybe?) in the car, bus or train.

Het was dan ook echt een dagje uit, want behalve de stoffen in de winkel, waar je vingers echt direct van gaan kriebelen want Marleen heeft een prachtige smaak, was er nog veel meer te zien.

It really was a day out, because besides the beautiful fabrics in the shop, from which it's really difficult to chose because Marleen had a great taste of fabrics and you would want to buy them all, there was much more to see.

Doorheen het prachtige oude huis, met hoge plafonds, statige deuren en kleine trappetjes, hingen maar liefst 70 quilts!

All through the lovely old house, with high ceilings, stately doors and small staircases, there were 70! quilts displayed!

En als het je even teveel werd, al die inspiratie, dan kon je heerlijk bijkomen in de gezellige stadstuin, onder het genot van koffie, een glas fruitwater of cava (Dirk was vooral het laatste druk aan het inschenken voor iedereen ;o) )...

And if your head was full of inspiration, you could catch a breath in the lovely walled garden, enjoying a cup of coffee, a glas of fresh fruit water or champagne (Dirk was making sure everyone had enough, especially of the last ;o) )...

...en overheerlijke koekjes en bokkepootjes van Confiserie Marleen. Dagvers en zonder bewaarmiddelen.

... and delicious cookies from Confiserie Marleen. Freshly baked and without preservatives.

Het was absoluut een dag met een gouden randje. Het was heerlijk weer, de sfeer zat er bij iedereen goed in en Dirk en Marleen hebben zich werkelijk overtroffen, ik denk dat iedereen het daarover eens was!

It was, as we say in Dutch, a day with a golden touch. Beautiful weather, a lot of ambiance and Dirk and Marleen really exceeded expectations, I think everyone agreed on that!

Het ronde blok...een nieuwe quilt?...

Naar aanleiding van mijn blogberichtje (klik) met de tips over het voorbereiden van je patchwork, kreeg ik een aantal vragen. Niet over de tips, die waren heel duidelijk, maar over het patchworkblok dat ik op de foto's liet zien.

In addition to this (click) blog post, about the tips on how to prepare your patchwork projects, I received quite some questions. Not on the tips, because they were very clear, but on the block I showed in the pictures.

Het is soms flink moeilijk om niet te veel nieuwe quilts te starten als er nog zoveel ligt waar ik al aan bezig ben. En dat is ook weer het geval met mijn Barn Dance jelly roll quilt en dit nieuwe project. Maar soms is er een goede reden (een echte goede reden, niet zomaar een flauw excuus, LOL), om toch even die goede voornemens te vergeten.

Eventhough sometimes it's hard to resist, I try not to start too many new projects before I finish some I'm already working on. This is also the case with my Barn Dance jelly roll quilt and the new project.
But sometimes, there's a good reason (a really good one, not some excuse, LOL), to forget about the good intentions for a while. 

Op 5 december zal ik aanwezig zijn bij de Opendeurdagen van Atelier Salgarollo in Westerlo. Ik zal hier mijn patronen verkopen en demonstreren hoe je op een gemakkelijke manier ronde vormen kunt naaien. Maar, nu alle Barn Dance blokken klaar zijn, had ik geen quilt-in-wording meer waar die ronde vormen in voorkwamen. Dus je ziet, dit is een heel goede reden om toch aan iets nieuws te beginnen. Zeker omdat ik dat nieuwe project al een paar weken niet uit mijn gedachten kreeg en ik er eigenlijk echt heel graag mee aan de slag wilde.

December 5, I will be present at the Open Door Days at Atelier Salgarollo in Westerlo. I will sell my patterns there and I will demonstrate how to sew curves. But with all Barn Dance blocks finished, I had no project-in-process that contained curved blocks. So you see, a very good reason to start something new. Especially because this new project had been on my mind for quite some weeks and I was quite impatient to start on it.

Ik heb het eerste blok voorbereid, zodat ik aan de hand hiervan zaterdag kan laten zien hoe je die ronde vormen eenvoudig in elkaar zet. Het blok bevat meer dan 60 verschillende stoffen, wat behoorlijk veel is voor 1 blok! Maar het ziet er zo leuk, gezellig en uniek uit en ondanks de vele verschillende kleuren, printjes en tinten, is het toch een heel mooi geheel.
En voor iedereen die ook al kriebels krijgt beloof ik dat er ook een patroon van de quilt komt.

I've prepared the first block, so that I can demonstrate the curved seams next Saturday. It contains more then 60 different fabrics in total, which is a lot for just 1 block! But it has such a lovely warm, unique look and despite the different colors, prints and tones, it definatly is a matching whole.
And to everyone who's getting excited about this quilt: I promise to write the pattern!

Dus zaterdag is iedereen van harte welkom (zie de info hierboven) bij Atelier Salgarollo. Moest je overigens op donderdag of vrijdag ook in de gelegenheid zijn: dan is Els van Bobbin aanwezig. Leuk!
Als er trouwens patronen of pakketten zijn die je graag wilt bestellen, laat het me even via mail weten, dan neem ik dit zaterdag zeker voor je mee!

Scrappy Stars Mini Quilt (het vervolg)...

De sterren uit een van mijn vorige berichtjes heb ik aan elkaar genaaid tot een mini quilt, met sashings tussen de blokken. Maar om daar de juiste stof voor te vinden, dat bleek nog een hele opgave: blauw was te koud, groen te groen en rood? Rood was mooi, maar ook een heel moeilijke kleur. Want kies maar eens de juiste tint - die ene tint die het quiltje nog meer warmte en uitstraling geeft.

The stars from my previous post were to be sewn together to a mini quilt, with sashings between the blocks. But choosing the right fabric for that appeared to be quite a task: blue was too cold, green too green, and red? Red was beautiful, but it's also a very different color. I wanted to pick the right shade, so it would brighten up the quilt a little.

Mijn rode stoffen belandden allemaal op de 'nee-stapel', want ze waren ofwel te roze, te bleek of te bruin... maar gelukkig, daar was hij ineens: het perfecte rode stofje! Het heeft een lief klein printje, heel geschikt voor een mini quilt. Dus tekende ik sashings af en begon ik te naaien.
Maar na 2 rijen had ik toch wel heel weinig sashings over... ik had me misteld en kwam er 3 tekort en de stof was op... Je weet misschien nog wel dat ik dit lapje ook heb gebruikt voor mijn Warm Winter Wishes naaldenmapje en het stukje dat ik daarin had gebruikt zou precies groot genoeg zijn voor de ontbrekende sashings. Maar ja, daar had ik nu natuurlijk niet zo veel aan...
Wat nu?

I placed all my red fabrics onto the 'no pile', because they were too pink, too pale, too brown,... but finally there it was: the perfect red fabric! It has this cute little print, perfect for a mini quilt. So I started drawing the sashings, I cut them and I started sewing.
But after 2 rows, I discoverd I had miscounted the sashings and I was 3 short and I ran out of fabric...  You might remember I used this fabric in my Warm Winter Wishes needle case, and the piece I used there would have been just enough for my missing sashings, but that of course couldn't solve the problem...
What was I to do?

Ineens herinnerde ik me dat ik nog wat nieuwe stoffen had gewassen en dat die nog in de wasmand lagen te wachten om gestreken te worden. Er was één rode stof bij en die bleek perfect te passen!

All of a sudden I remembered I had some new fabrics that weren't ironed yet and therefore were not in my stash, but still in my laundry basket. There was just one red fabric among them, but it matched very well!

Omdat 3 andere sashings rechts onderaan in de hoek er misschien wat gek uit zou zien, heb ik de baantjes rond het middenblok losgemaakt en vervangen door de nieuwe. Ik moet zeggen, ondanks dat het niet echt de bedoeling was zo, ben ik wel heel blij met hoe het eruit ziet. Het is een beetje eigenwijs, grappig en niet zo 'standaard' (en als ik je niet had verteld dat ik te weinig sashings had, dan had je vast gedacht dat dit zo de bedoeling was, LOL!)

Because 3 different sashings in the lower right corner would look a bit funny, I unpicked the ones around the centre block and replaced them by the new ones. And I must say, eventhough it wasn't planned this way, I'm very happy with the result. It's a bit quirky and surprising and it gives the quilt something special (and if I hadn't told you this story, you probably would have thought I did this intentionally, LOL!).

Hetzelfde probleem had ik met de achterkantstof. Te snel gemeten en ook een paar cm te klein. Gelukkig heb ik met mijn Naumann er snel een extra stukje roze (een schattig lapje met kleine bloempjes) aan gezet en was ook dit probleem zo weer van de baan.

The same problem occured with the backing fabric. Measured to quickly I was some centimeters short. Thanks to my Naumann and an additional piece of pink fabric (a really cute one with small flowers), this problem was solved quickly.

Tijdens de tentoonstelling van antieke log cabin quilts in Ste Marie afgelopen september was mij opgevallen dat veel van de antieke quilts geknoopt waren in plaats van doorgequilt. Het ziet er leuk uit en aangezien de patroondelen voor mijn mini quilt maar klein waren en er dus veel naadjes dicht op elkaar zaten zou quilten niet zo gemakkelijk zijn. En dus dacht ik: 'waarom probeer ik dit niet eens?'

While visiting the exhibition of log cabin quilts in Ste Marie last September, I noticed many of the antique quilts were tied instead of quilted. It looks lovely and since the pieces in my mini quilt are quite small and the many seams would make quilting more difficult, I thought 'why don't I try this myself?'

Ik heb bijpassende kleuren borduurgaren gekozen voor de blokken en ecru voor de hoekblokjes. Ik heb telkens met 4 draadjes tegelijk gewerkt, omdat ik dacht dat 2 draadjes niet zo'n pluizig effect zouden geven. Dit is eigenlijk een heel makkelijke en super snelle manier om de 3 lagen van je quilt aan elkaar te maken en hoewel ik het niet voor een sprei zou doen (quilten is toch iets steviger, zeker als je je quilt vaak wast), is het perfect voor mijn sterrenquiltje!


I choose matching embroidery threads to all blocks and ecru for the corner stones. I used 4 threads of embroidery floss, I thought maybe 2 wouldn't make this nice, fuzzy tie, and got started. This method is really easy and really fast and eventhough I wouldn't use it for a bed quilt (quilting is more firm, especially when you plan to launder the quilt regularly), it's perfect for my star quilt!

Ik heb het quiltje afgewerkt met een mooie blauwe bies. Een lapje dat al een aantal jaren in mijn voorraad zat en wat heel mooi bij deze mini past.

I finished the quilt with a beautiful blue binding. A fabric I had in my stash for quite some time, which came in perfect for this mini. 

Het quiltje het Scrappy Stars (dat hoef ik vast niet verder toe te lichten :o)), is 42 x 42 cm en maakt deel uit van onze Mini Quilt Club.

The quilt is called Scrappy Stars (no need to explain that!), measures 42 cm x 42 cm and is part of our Mini Quilt Club.

Het volgende Club patroon komt in januari uit en hoewel ik natuurlijk nog niet te veel mag verklappen omdat het een verrassing is, kan ik wel al vertellen dat ik iets nieuws aan het uitproberen ben, iets dat ik nog nooit eerder in mijn quilts heb gedaan. Hopelijk lukt het en wordt het zoals ik hoop, maar de eerste poging ziet er al veelbelovend uit!

The next Club pattern will be released in January and eventhough I have to keep it a surprise, I can tell you I'm trying something new, which I have never done before in any of my quilts. Hope it works out fine, but my first attempt looks really nice!

... is er een grote tas vol met quilts en een stapel patronen op weg naar De Potterije in Lokeren, voor het winterweekend!

... a large bag filled with quilts and a pile of patterns are on their way to De Potterije in Lokeren, for the Winter weekend!

Langsgaan is zeker de moeite, want na de zomer hebben Marleen en Dirk de winkel in een nieuw jasje gestoken en er is zoveel moois te zien...

Make sure to stop by, because after the Summer, Marleen and Dirk gave the shop a whole new look and there are so many beautiful things to see...

... en er zijn heel veel stoffen om uit te kiezen!

Warm Winter Wishes...

Mijn nieuwe naaldenmapje en speldenkussen zijn al volop in gebruik en het patroon ervan was juist op tijd klaar voor de nieuwsbrief van november.

With my new needlecase and pincushion already in use, I finished writing the pattern just in time for the November newsletter.

De restjes die ik hiervoor heb gebruikt passen zo leuk bij elkaar en geven het een gezellige, warme, winterse uitstraling.

The scraps I used go very well together and they add to the warm feel of these fun projects. 

Het grootste restje stof dat wordt gebruikt was 12 x 15 cm, dus het is een leuk werkje om al die ienie-mini restjes die we van vorige projecten hebben liggen, eindelijk eens een doel te geven. Ik denk dat vrijwel iedereen ook nog wel een stukje vilt en tussenvulling heeft liggen, net als een stukje touw en een paar knopen voor de finishing touch.

The largest scrap used measures 12 x 15 cm, so it's an ideal purpose for those tiny leftovers we all have from previous projects. I guess most of you also have some felt, rope, batting and buttons in your stash for the finishing touch.

En voor wie graag zelf aan de slag wil is hier de praktische info:
het patroon heet 'Warm Winter Wishes' en het bevat een duidelijke kleurenfoto, een lijst met benodigdheden, duidelijke werkwijzes voor zowel het naaldenmapje alsook het speldenkussen, mallen en patroondelen op maat, naaischema's en tips voor het appliceren.
