'n Ouwetje...

We gaan terug naar het voorjaar van 2009, toen ik deze stoffen koos voor een nieuwe quilt.

We have to go back to Spring 2009, when I chose these fabrics to start a new quilt.

Ik vond ze allemaal mooi, die stoffen, buiten eentje: de groenige met de veelkleurige bloemen erop. Brrrr... ik vond het echt een ontzettend lelijke stof en de reden waarom hij in mijn voorraad terecht was gekomen, was omdat hij in een scrapbag zat die ik ooit eens had gekocht.

I loved all fabrics, for one: the greenish one, with the multi colored flowers on it. Brrrr... I thought it was a really ugly fabric and the reason I had it was no other then because it was in a scrap bag I  bought...

Maar ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat de stof het niet verdiend om lelijk genoemd te worden, want het is eigenlijk de sleutel naar de quilt. Vanwege alle verschillende kleuren die erin voorkomen, zorgt deze stof ervoor dat alle andere lapjes een mooie combinatie vormen. Bovendien is het een echte blikvanger in de quilt, waardoor het leuker wordt om naar de quilt te kijken. En wordt er niet gezegd dat elke mooie quilt minstens één 'lelijk' lapje moet bevatten?

But actually, the fabric doesn't deserve to be called ugly, because it actually is the key to the quilt. Because it contains so many colors, it needs to be added, to combine all the other fabrics. On top of that, it's a real eyecatcher, which makes the quilt more interesting to look at. And doesn't one say that each beautiful quilt needs to contain at least one 'ugly' fabric?

Ik heb met veel plezier aan het middendeel van de quilt gewerkt, zeker omdat het zo mooi, antiekerig uitziet. Maar de rand was ook een heel leuk werkje. Al die mooie lapjes verenigen in een 'scrappy' rand was ontzettend leuk!

I loved appliquéing the centre of the quilt, especially because it has such a lovely, antique look. But the border was also a pleasure to work on. To combine all these lovely fabrics in a 'scrappy' border was so much fun!

Een label met mijn naam, het jaartal en de naam van de quilt achterop en voila... mijn 'antieke' bloemenquilt was klaar.

A label with my name, the year and the name of the quilt on the back and voila... my 'antique' flower quilt was finished. 

De quilt is 82 x 92 cm en heet 'Ode To Simplicity' (ode aan de eenvoud), gewoon, omdat mooie dingen niet altijd moeilijk en ingewikkeld moeten zijn...

It measures 82 cm x 92 cm and it's called 'Ode To Simplicity', just because beautiful things don't need to be complicated...

En last but not least een close up van het 'lelijke' stofje. Ik vind dat het er prachtig uitziet, zo in de quilt. Zo mooi zelfs, dat ik terug ben gegaan naar de winkel om er nog een lapje van te kopen. Want als het waar is dat een mooie quilt minstens één lelijk stofje moet bevatten, dan kan ik er  maar beter één in huis hebben ;o)

And last but not least a close up with the 'ugly' fabric. I love the way it turned out in the quilt. Actually, I must admit, I went back to the shop, to buy some more of it. Because if it's true that a beautiful quilt needs to contain one ugly fabric, I'm settled for my next few quilts ;o)

F-12 Starburst...

Gistermiddag heb ik gewerkt aan de rand van mijn sneeuwmanquilt. Maar 's avonds moest dit even plaats maken voor iets anders: mijn Dear Jane. Ik moest nog maar een paar steekjes doen voor het blok klaar was. Ik ben blij dat ik er na 7 maanden eindelijk weer een blok heb gemaakt.

Yesterday, I spend the afternoon working on the border of my snowman quilt. But in the evening, it had to make place for another quilt: my Dear Jane. I needed to make only a few more stitches to finish another block. I'm glad that after 7 months, I finally fineshed a new block.

Blok F-12 Starburst was nogal een gepuzzel. Ik kon maar niet zien hoe Jane het blok had gemaakt, met name dan de inwaartse naden in de ecru delen. Had ze het gepatcht? Of geappliceerd misschien? Uiteindelijk koos ik om de groene driehoeken te appliceren. Zo zit het netjes, zonder dat de stoffen beginnen te trekken.

Block F-12 Starburst was quite a puzzle to me. I couldn't figure out how Jane had made the block with the inward seams in the ecru parts. Did she patch it? Did she appliqué? I finally settled on appliquéing the green triangles onto the ecru fabric. This way it's done neatly, without the fabrics stretching in ways they mustn't.

Het volgende blok is blok G-12 Gloriae, een mooi blok, maar volgens mij best een uitdaging... Hopelijk moet dit blok niet zo lang wachten om gemaakt te worden als blok F-12 ;o)

'n Weekendwerkje...

Muziekje aan, een grote kop thee binnen handbereik en heel veel scrappy lapjes die aan elkaar genaaid moeten worden. De perfecte manier om het weekend door te brengen!

Music on, a big cup of tea within reach and many scrappy blocks to sew. A perfect way to spend the weekend!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 3

Waar was ik gebleven...
Nadat ik een deel van de eerste strook flying geeses had gemaakt, kon ik niet langer wachten om aan de slag te gaan met mijn middenblok. Omdat ik bijna al mijn quilts zelf ontwerp, heb ik nooit een foto of voorbeeld waarop ik kan zien hoe de quilt uiteindelijk zal worden. Dit maakt me nog nieuwsgieriger naar het eindresultaat en geef toe: patchwork randen met een grijs getekend stitchery blok,... nee, dat is niks...

Now where was I...
After working on the first flying geese border for a while, I could no longer wait to start with my centre block. Since I design almost all quilts I make myself, I never have a picture or example that shows what the quilt will look like when finished. This makes me even more curious for the final result, and you must admit, patchwork borders with a drawn on stitchery block,... that just won't do...

Kleuren kiezen voor de stitchery vond ik misschien nog wel het moeilijkste van heel de quilt. Natuurlijk bruin en groen voor de dennetak, grijzig voor de sneeuwman en goudbruin voor de sterren. Daarna heb ik wat kleur toegevoegd in de letters, wanten en stipjes, om zo een warm en vrolijk blok te krijgen. En ondanks dat ik op voorhand niet bedacht had hoe ik wilde dat het blok eruit zou komen te zien, is het precies zo geworden als ik hoopte.

Choosing the colors for the stitchery was the hardest part. Of course brown and green for the pine tree branch, grey-ish for the snowman and golden brown for the stars. Then I added some color, in the letters, the mittens, the dots, to make a warm and bright block. And eventhough I hadn't have a plan before I started, I think it turned out just the way I hoped it would.

Tuscan Mosaic...

Van Toscane door naar mijn nieuwste quilt...
Ik begon aan mijn 'vakantiequiltje' in juni, tijdens onze mini-vakantie in Frankrijk. Ik wilde iets kleins meenemen om aan te werken. Iets wat ik gemakkelijk kon oppakken en weer wegsteken. Iets wat niet over de grond zou slepen als ik er buiten aan werkte. Gewoon een leuk, klein werkje.

From Tuscany on to my newest quilt...
I started working on my 'vacation quilt' in June during a trip to France. I wanted something small to bring. Something I could easily pick up and put away again. Something that wouldn't hang on the soil while working on it outside. Just a lovely, small project.

De stofjes zijn van een Moda Charm Pack. Ik vind het leuk om deze kleine lapjes om te toveren tot een mooie quilt. Ik heb een ecru achtergrond stof toegevoegd, en ook wat roze voor de bies en afwerkbies en bruin voor de rand. Hier vertelde ik dat ik eigenlijk een rode sashing wilde, maar nu dat de quilt klaar is ben ik heel erg blij met de roze bies. Het geeft de quilt een warme, antiekerige uitstraling!

The fabrics I chose are from a Moda Charm Pack. I love to see these small fabrics turn into a beautiful quilt. I added an ecru background fabric, pink for the sashing and binding, and brown for the border. Here I told you how I wanted to add a red sashing, but now that the quilt is finished, I'm glad I went with the pink! It has such a cozy and warm antique look!

Het middendeel van de quilt doet me denken aan de vele mozaïeken die we in Italië hebben gezien, met hun kleine steentjes. En omdat ik een groot deel van de quilt in Toscane in elkaar heb gezet, vond ik de naam 'Tuscan Mosaic' perfect voor de quilt.

The centre of the quilt made me think of the many mosaics we saw in Italy, with it's many small tiles. And since I mainly worked on the quilt while in Tuscany, I thought 'Tuscan Mosaic' would be the perfect name for the quilt.

Here's one more close up of the quilt. I always think designing a quilt with small fabrics like those from a Charm Pack is quite a challenge, but I love how this one turned out and I'm proud of the result! Toscane...

Ga je met me mee op reis naar Toscane? Het is al meer dan een maand geleden dat we daar waren, maar omdat het hier maar grijzig en zelfs zo nu en dan wat regenachtig is, dacht ik dat we allemaal wel wat zonneschijn konden gebruiken. Dus kom gezellig met me mee op een klein uitstapje...

Are you joining me on a trip to Tuscany? It's been over a month since we've been there, but since the weather over here is grey and even a bit rainy every now and then, I thought we all could use some sunshine. So hop on, lets go on a small trip...

We verbleven in een prachtig, sfeervol hotel met een schitterend uitzicht over het oude stadscentrum van Siena. Een ontbijtje op het terras was de perfecte manier om de dag te beginnen!

We stayed in the most lovely hotel, with a great view on the old village of Siena. A breakfast on the terrace, what a great way to start the day!

Ik was nog nooit eerder in Italïe geweest en is was verrast door het Toscaanse landschap: op sommige plaatsen vind je veel bossen, andere delen zijn 'kaal', gewoon droge aarde, net een maanlandschap. Het was een groot contrast, maar beide erg charmant.

I had never been to Italy before and I was surprised by the Tuscan landscape which in some parts is covered in woodland, and in other parts it's just plain earth, like a moon landscape. It was a big contrast, but both very charming.

Ik heb al vaker verteld dat wij niet het bij-het-zwembad-liggende type zijn. In plaats daarvan bezochten we vele dorpjes, het een nog mooier dan het ander,...

As I told you before, we're not the kind of people to hang around the swimming pool doing nothing. Instead, we visited many villages, one even lovelier then the other,...

... we maakten een ritje door het prachtige Toscaanse landschap en langs de Monte Amiata vulkaan,...

... we took a tour to discover the Tuscan landscape and the Monte Amiata vulcano,...

... en natuurlijk stopten we zo nu en dan voor een hapje en drankje in gezellige restaurantjes en bars.

... and of course every now and then we stopped for refreshments in lovely bars and restuarants.

In Siena konden we de feesten na de Palio bijwonen. Een bewoner van de stad vertelde ons dat tijdens deze optochten de winnende wijk of 'contrada' de verliezende wijken voor gek zet. Maar, aangezien ook die verliezende wijken vrolijk meeliepen denk ik dat het met de kwade gevoelens nogal meeviel.

In Siena we enjoyed the Palio after parties. A local man told us that during these parades the winning district or 'contrada' made fun of the Sienese districts who lost the Palio. But, since everyone joined the parades and parties, I don't think there were any hard feelings.

Aan alle goede dingen komt een einde, en dus moesten we Toscane gedag zeggen en weer richting huis gaan. Ik weet niet of het volgend jaar al zal zijn, maar ik weet wel dat we ooit nog wel eens zullen teruggaan naar deze prachtige streek. Voor nu herinner ik onze vakantie in mijn nieuwste quiltje, maar daarover later meer...

All good things come to an end, and so we had to say goodbye to Tuscany and head home again. I'm not sure if it will be next year, but I do know one time we will visit this lovely region again. For now, I remember our holiday in my latest quilt, but more about that later...

Van schets tot...

Gisteren, terwijl de regen met bakken uit de hemel kwam, maakte ik een beginnetje aan mijn sneeuwmannenquilt. Zoals ik eerder al schreef ben ik er nog niet helemaal uit hoe de rest van de quilt gaat worden, dus beperkte de voorbereiding zich voorlopig tot het middenblok. Normaal gezien zijn mijn schetsen echt geschetst en zien mijn sneeuwmannen eruit als een soort Barbapapa, maar deze keer was de schets perfect. Ik heb hem dan ook ingescand en vergroot in plaats van hem in het juiste formaat na te tekenen, zoals ik gewoonlijk doe.

Yesterday, while the rain was pooring down, I made a start on my new snowman quilt. As I wrote before I wasn't quite sure about the design, so I started with the centre block. Usually, my sketches are real sketches and snowmen mostly look like some sort of Barbapapa, but this time, my sketch was just perfect. So instead of redrawing it in the right size, which I normally do, I scanned and enlarged it.

Sinds mijn vorige berichtje, waarin ik enkel de stoffen maar liet zien, heb ik verschillende reacties en e-mails gekregen met de vraag of het patroon ook in de webwinkel komt. Ik voel me vereerd dat jullie al om het patroon vragen, voordat ik zelfs nog maar een ienie mini stukje van de quilt heb laten zien *Ü* Dus, voordat ik met het middenblok aan de slag ging, schreef ik eerst het patroon. Zo kan ik het tijdens het maken van de quilt nakijken en eventuele fouten verbeteren.

Sincy my last post, in which I only showed you the fabrics, I already received comments and e-mails if the pattern would be available in our web shop soon. I'm quite honored that you've been asking for the pattern before you've even seen the tiniest bit of the quilt *Ü* So, before I got started with the centre block, I wrote the pattern. This way, I can check it for errors while making the quilt.

En dit is een foto van het middenblok. Ik heb de stofjes op de achtergrond gestreken. Ik heb deze keer weer eens gekozen voor appliceren met vliesofix, in plaats van appliceren op de onzichtbare manier. Ik vind dit altijd een leuke techniek om te doen en die kleine festonsteekjes geven de quilt een gezellige country uitstraling. En, wat vind je er tot nu toe van?

So here's a picture of the centre block. I ironed the fabrics on the background. I decided on using fusible webbing appliqué over the traditional appliqué method. I love that technique and it gives the quilt such a cute and cozy country look. I do hope you'll like the result so far!

Dierendag...

Ik was afgelopen donderdag helemaal vergeten dat het Dierendag was... Ik denk niet dat ons 'monster' ermee inzat, want hij wordt elke dag behandeld alsof het dierendag is. Hij zit lekker bij mij op schoot als ik een logje schrijf, hij krijgt zijn eigen quiltje om op te slapen terwijl ik aan een nieuw project werk, hij krijgt de restjes pasta, soep, cake en babi pangang (daar is hij dol op!) en hij krijgt veel, heel veel aandacht.

Soms zou ik best een kat willen zijn... ;o)

I totally forgot about World Animal Day last Thursday... I don't think our little 'monster' minds, because he's treated like it's World Animal Day every day. He always sits on my lap when I'm writing a new post, he gets his own quilt to sleep on while I'm working on a new project, he gets the pasta, soup, cake and char siu (which he loves!) and he gets lots and lots of attention.

I sometimes wish I was a cat... ;o)

Winter In Blogland - Blok 2

Het is alweer een week geleden dat we van start gingen met de Winter In Blogland quilt. Heb jij je eerste blok al klaar? Ik weet nog dat ik aan de mijne bezig was, reuzebenieuwd naar wat de andere ontwerpsters zouden maken. Want deze quilt was voor ons immers net zo'n grote verrassing als het nu voor jullie is!

Already a week has passed since we started with the Winter In Blogland project. Have you finished your first block yet? I remember working on mine, while wondering what the blocks of the other designers would look like. This quilt was just as much of a surprise for us then it is for you now!

Samen met Mams knipte ik alle stoffen voor de quilt, zodat ik er meteen mee aan de slag kon gaan. Ik begon met wat patchwork, zelfs nog voordat ik een steekje maakte aan ons middenblok. Ik was veel te nieuwsgierig naar hoe de top eruit zou komen te zien. Het scrappy effect gaf de quilt meteen al een warme, gezellige uitstraling, zelfs ondanks dat hij nog lang niet klaar was.

Together with Mams, I cut all fabrics for the quilt, so I could start right away. I did some patchwork first, before I even started stitching my centre block. I was way too curious to see what the top would look like. The scrappy effect immediately gave the quilt a warm and cozy look, eventhough it was far from finished.

Nu is het tijd voo het tweede patroon. Het blok van deze week is ontworpen door Inés en Marta van Quilt House Patchwork in Spanje. Ze hebben een pracht van een blok ontworpen! Ik zou zo in dit leuke huisje willen gaan wonen en dromen van een witte Kerst! Je kunt het patroon downloaden van het blog van Quilt House (klik).

'Iets winters'...

Ondanks dat ik heel het jaar door quilt, vind ik dit het fijnst in de koudere seizoenen. Het lijkt wel of ik dan nog meer quiltzin en inspiratie heb, want ik vind het heerlijk om met een werkje en een kop thee op de bank te zitten.

Eventhough I quilt the whole year through, I especially like to quilt during the colder seasons. I seem to be more motivated and inspired and I love to sit on the couch with a project and a large cup of tea.

Ik had me voorgenomen om niet teveel nieuwe projecten te starten, maar de koude tijd van het jaar doorstaan zonder 'iets winters'... Nee, dat kan niet! Dat roept om een nieuw sneeuwmanproject. Dus dook ik in mijn lapjesvoorraad voor stoffen en ik vond zelfs nog wat roestige belletjes en sterren en ook leuke stervormige knoopjes. Ik weet nog niet precies hoe de quilt eruit gaat zien, maar eenmaal dat ik aan de slag ben met het middenblok zullen de ideeën voor de rest van de quilt vanzelf wel volgen. Ik hou je op de hoogte! ;o)

I planned not to start to many new projects, but a cold season without working on something wintery... That can't be! That calls for a new snowman project. So I grabbed some fabrics from my stash and I even found some rusty stars and bells, as well as cute star buttons to use. I'm not quite sure about the final design of the quilt, but once I get started with the centre block, I'm sure I will get inspired on how to finish the quilt. I'll keep you updated! ;o)
