Winter In Blogland - Blok 8

De afgelopen 8 weken hebben we met veel plezier kunnen werken aan de Winter In Blogland quilt. Ik hoop dat jullie er allemaal van hebben genoten!
We hebben al veel blokken gezien (ik ben nog bezig met het bijwerken van het fotoalbum, sorry!) en vandaag kunnen we eindelijk de quilt laten zien.

We've had 8 weeks of fun, working on the Winter In Blogland quilt. I hope you all enjoyed it!
We've seen many blocks already (still working on the photo gallery, sorry!) and today, we can reveal to you the finished quilt.

Als een quilt klaar is, heb ik altijd een beetje een dubbel gevoel. Enerzijds werk ik altijd erg graag aan mijn projecten en ik vind het dan ook jammer als ze klaar zijn. Aan de andere kant ben ik natuurlijk altijd blij als er iets af is en ik van het eindresultaat kan genieten.

I always feel contradictory when I finish a quilt: on one hand, I enjoy working on each of my projects and I'm always a bit sad when it's finished, on the other hand, of course, I'm happy to have another finish and to enjoy the final result.

Maar nu gaat de quilt eerst op reis naar Spanje, waar hij door Inés en Marta zal worden tentoongesteld tijdens de lokale quilttentoonstelling (ik weet zeker dat zij hierover nog wel een berichtje zullen schrijven op hun blog, dus mocht je in de gelegenheid zijn, breng hen dan zeker een bezoekje!)

But now the quilt is going to make a trip to Spain, where it will be exhibited by Inés and Marta on a local quilt show (I'm sure they will write about it on their blog when the time comes, so if you live nearby, make sure to visit!).

Het was ontzettend leuk om dit project te organiseren en we willen dan ook Jacqueline, Inés & Marta en Els van harte bedanken voor hun inspiratie, ideeën en creativiteit.

It was such a pleasure organising this project and we do want to give a big thank you! to Jacqueline, Inés & Marta and Els for their inspiration, ideas and creativity.

Nu is het hoog tijd voor het laatste blok. Een blok dat ik zelf erg toepasselijk vind. Niet alleen omdat we 's winters graag liters warme thee drinken, maar ook omdat ik niet kan quilten zonder een grote kop thee in de buurt (in de winter liefst kaneelthee, heerlijk!), zeker als die thee dan ook nog eens uit een gezellig kopje wordt gedronken!

Now it's time for the final block. A block, which I think, is very appropriate to the quilt. Not only because we like to drink liters of warm tea during the winter, but also because I can't quilt without a large cup of tea nearby (I like cinnamon flavoured tea in winter!), especially when it's druk from a nice cup!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 7

Nadat ik mijn quilts heb doorgequilt volgt een heel belangrijk werkje: een label maken. Op mijn labels schrijf ik altijd de naam van de quilt, mijn naam en het jaartal. In het geval van de Winter In Blogland is het label een beetje groter dan anders, want bij deze speciale quilt komen er immers 6 namen op het label te staan :o)

After quilting my projects, one of the most important things has te be done: adding a label to the quilt.
My labels always contain the name of the quilt, my name and the year. In case of the Winter In Blogland quilt, the label is a bit larger then usual, since this special quilt contains 6 names instead of one :o)

En als het label eenmaal achterop de quilt is geappliceerd, is het tijd voor het laatste werkje: het omnaaien van de afwerkbies. Volgende week laten we jullie het eindresultaat zien!

After appliquéing the label to the back of the quilt, it's time for the final step: sewing the binding.
Next week we'll show you the final result!

Maar eerst is het tijd voor het 7e blok. Hiervoor maken we een uitstapje naar Spanje, naar Inés en Marta, die een prachtige kerstbal hebben ontworpen. Het is een bewerkelijk blok, maar een prachtig winters landschapje en een perfecte aanvulling voor de quilt!

But first, it's time for the 7th block. We need to make a little trip to Spain, to Inés and Marta, who made a beautiful Christmas bauble. A quite labourious block, but a lovely winter scenery and a perfect addition to the quilt!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 6

Vorige week liet ik je het gequilte midden van de quilt zien. Nu is het tijd voor de rand.

 Last week I showed you how I quilted the centre of the quilt, now it's time for the border.

Bij iedere quilt maak ik altijd dezelfde fout: als het midden gequilt is en ik alleen de rand nog moet quilten, dan denk ik dat ik bijna klaar ben. Maar in tegendeel, de rand is meer werk dan het midden.

With every quilt I make the same mistake: when the centre is quilted and just the border is left to quilt, I think I'm almost done. But on the contrary, the border seems to be more work then the centre.

En bij deze quilt heb ik zelfs nog extra gequilt, want ik dacht dat een gequilte guirlande de quilt extra mooi zou maken. Hoewel het veel werk was, heb ik geen spijt dat ik dit patroon gekozen heb.

In this case, I did put in some extra work, because I thoutght a quilted wreath in the border would add more beauty to the quilt. And although it was a lot of work, I don't regret choosing this pattern!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 5

Nadat de quilt was opgespannen kon het quiltplezier beginnen! Toen ik nog maar pas quiltte, had ik echt een enorme hekel aan doorquilten. Ik kreeg mijn steekjes niet gelijk en ze stonden geregeld niet in de juiste richting. Het leek ook nooit echt op te schieten...

After layering the quilt, the quilting fun could begin! When I just started quilting, I really hated that part. I had problems getting my stitches even and in the right direction, and I never seemed to make a lot of progress...

Maar een paar jaar geleden had ik ineens de slag te pakken. Ik vind het quilten nu zelfs zo leuk, dat al mijn quilts intensief doorgequilt worden.

But a few years ago, all of a sudden I got the hang of it. I even like it so much that since then, all my quilts are quilted thoroughly.

Zo ook de Winter In Blogland. Ik koos ervoor om de midden- en hoekblokken juist binnen de rand door te quilten. Ruiten in de rode sashings, een prachtige kabel in de blauwe rand (die komt echt heel mooi uit in de quilt!) en wat 'servies-figuurtjes' in de flying geese randen.

As for the Winter In Blogland, I choose to quilt just around the inside of the centre and corner blocks. Diamonds in the sashings, a lovely wreath in the blue border (I love how this turned out!) and some 'dinnerware designs' in the flying geese borders.

Normaal laat ik de rijgdraden zitten tijdens het quilten, maar omdat ik deze keer met de latten-methode had opgespannen en het dus anders was doorgeregen, heb ik de draden voor het doorquilten stukje bij beetje weggeknipt. Ik moet zeggen dat dat prima werkt, al heb ik er ook geen problemen mee als de rijgdraden er tijdens het quilten nog in zitten.

I usually don't remove the basting threads while quilting, but since I basted differently this time (using the method with the wooden laths), I decided to try cutting away the threads before quilting and I must say it worked out just fine, although I don't mind leaving the threads untill I finished quilting either.

Deze week is het tijd voor het eerste van de vier hoekblokken. Els heeft een schattige mini kerstboom ontworpen. Je kunt het blok downloaden van de Bobbin blog.

Winter In Blogland - Blok 4

We hopen dat jullie allemaal met veel plezier aan de Winter In Blogland quilt werken!
Ik vond het in elk geval een feestje om ermee bezig te zijn, en om de mooie blokken van de verschillende ontwerpsters, die inmiddels in de brievenbus waren gevallen, te bewonderen. Het is leuk om te zien dat iedere ontwerpster blokken heeft ontworpen in haar eigen stijl, maar dat ze toch zo mooi samengaan in één quilt.

We hope you're all enjoying working on the Winter In Blogland quilt! 
I sure did! Especially receiving all blocks and admiring the lovely work all designers did was so much fun. It was nice to see how all designers had made blocks which all reflect their own style, but which combine very well in one quilt.

Het was even puzzelen om de juiste balans te vinden in de quilt: welk blok moet waar komen... Na de blokken wat heen en weer te hebben geschoven, kwam ik op deze lay-out uit. Ik denk dat zo alle blokken mooi tot hun recht komen.

It was a bit of a puzzle to find the perfect balance in the quilt: which block should be placed where... After placing and re-placing the blocks, I settled on this lay-out. I think all blocks come out well.

Toen de top klaar was, begon het opspannen. Deze keer heb ik het met de methode met de houten latten gedaan, wat prima ging. Het heeft me in elk geval een pijnlijke rug en zere knieën bespaard ;o)

When the top was finished, I layered the quilt and basted it. This time, I used the method with the wooden laths, which worked out just fine. It definately saved me a painful back and sour knees ;o)

Vandaag is het tijd voor blok 4. Alweer het laatste van de middenblokken, wat betekent dat we halverwege zijn! Jacqueline heeft een sfeervol winters blok ontworpen. Het doet me verlangen naar lage temperaturen en veel sneeuw! Het is al lang geleden dat ik nog eens geschaatst heb, maar wie weet misschien dit jaar...

Today it's time for block 4. Already the last of the centre blocks, which means we're halfway! Jacqueline has designed a lovely, wintery block which makes me long for low temperatures and lots of snow! It's been a long time since I went skating, but who knows, maybe this year...

Winter In Blogland - Blok 3

Waar was ik gebleven...
Nadat ik een deel van de eerste strook flying geeses had gemaakt, kon ik niet langer wachten om aan de slag te gaan met mijn middenblok. Omdat ik bijna al mijn quilts zelf ontwerp, heb ik nooit een foto of voorbeeld waarop ik kan zien hoe de quilt uiteindelijk zal worden. Dit maakt me nog nieuwsgieriger naar het eindresultaat en geef toe: patchwork randen met een grijs getekend stitchery blok,... nee, dat is niks...

Now where was I...
After working on the first flying geese border for a while, I could no longer wait to start with my centre block. Since I design almost all quilts I make myself, I never have a picture or example that shows what the quilt will look like when finished. This makes me even more curious for the final result, and you must admit, patchwork borders with a drawn on stitchery block,... that just won't do...

Kleuren kiezen voor de stitchery vond ik misschien nog wel het moeilijkste van heel de quilt. Natuurlijk bruin en groen voor de dennetak, grijzig voor de sneeuwman en goudbruin voor de sterren. Daarna heb ik wat kleur toegevoegd in de letters, wanten en stipjes, om zo een warm en vrolijk blok te krijgen. En ondanks dat ik op voorhand niet bedacht had hoe ik wilde dat het blok eruit zou komen te zien, is het precies zo geworden als ik hoopte.

Choosing the colors for the stitchery was the hardest part. Of course brown and green for the pine tree branch, grey-ish for the snowman and golden brown for the stars. Then I added some color, in the letters, the mittens, the dots, to make a warm and bright block. And eventhough I hadn't have a plan before I started, I think it turned out just the way I hoped it would.

Winter In Blogland - Blok 2

Het is alweer een week geleden dat we van start gingen met de Winter In Blogland quilt. Heb jij je eerste blok al klaar? Ik weet nog dat ik aan de mijne bezig was, reuzebenieuwd naar wat de andere ontwerpsters zouden maken. Want deze quilt was voor ons immers net zo'n grote verrassing als het nu voor jullie is!

Already a week has passed since we started with the Winter In Blogland project. Have you finished your first block yet? I remember working on mine, while wondering what the blocks of the other designers would look like. This quilt was just as much of a surprise for us then it is for you now!

Samen met Mams knipte ik alle stoffen voor de quilt, zodat ik er meteen mee aan de slag kon gaan. Ik begon met wat patchwork, zelfs nog voordat ik een steekje maakte aan ons middenblok. Ik was veel te nieuwsgierig naar hoe de top eruit zou komen te zien. Het scrappy effect gaf de quilt meteen al een warme, gezellige uitstraling, zelfs ondanks dat hij nog lang niet klaar was.

Together with Mams, I cut all fabrics for the quilt, so I could start right away. I did some patchwork first, before I even started stitching my centre block. I was way too curious to see what the top would look like. The scrappy effect immediately gave the quilt a warm and cozy look, eventhough it was far from finished.

Nu is het tijd voo het tweede patroon. Het blok van deze week is ontworpen door Inés en Marta van Quilt House Patchwork in Spanje. Ze hebben een pracht van een blok ontworpen! Ik zou zo in dit leuke huisje willen gaan wonen en dromen van een witte Kerst! Je kunt het patroon downloaden van het blog van Quilt House (klik).

Winter In Blogland - Blok 1

Vandaag is de Grote Dag... De start van het Winter In Blogland quilt project!
Ik wil wedden dat wij net zo staan te popelen als jullie, zeker omdat we het zo lang geheim hebben moeten houden.

Today is the Big Day... The start of the Winter In Blogland quilt project!
I bet we're just as excited as you are, especially because we have had to keep it secret for so long.

Het begon allemaal in de zomer van 2011, toen Mams en ik een idee hadden voor een nieuw, gratis project. We hadden zoveel plezier gehad aan de BOM en de BOS, dat we we opnieuw een soortgelijk project wilden doen. Soortgelijk, maar deze keer toch ook helemaal anders...

It started in the Summer of 2011, when Mams and I came up with the idea of designing a new, free project. We had had so much fun with our BOM and BOS, that we definately wanted to do a project like that again. But, this time, it had to be different....

We vroegen 4 andere ontwerpsters om mee te doen en elk 2 blokken te maken voor de quilt. Jacqueline van The Log Cabin, Els van Bobbin en Inés en Marta van Quilt House zeiden allemaal meteen 'JA'! We stuurden hen allemaal wat voorbeeldjes van de stoffen en garens en ook stof voor de beide stitcheryblokken, zodat ze meteen aan de slag konden gaan. Ik hoef je vast niet te vertellen hoe benieuwd we waren naar de resultaten!

Therefore, we contacted 4 other designers, and asked them to join in the fun and to make 2 blocks each for the quilt. Jacqueline from The Log Cabin, Els from Bobbin and Inés and Marta from Quilt House, all said 'YES'! We send them some samples of fabric and thread, as well as fabric for both stitchery blocks, so they could start designing and making their blocks. I can't tell you how excited we were to see the results!

Voordat je aan de slag gaat, moet je onderstaande instructies downloaden (klik op de juiste taal). Het patroon bevat een overzicht van de benodigdheden, instructies voor het maken van de blokken en de top en algemene instructies om de quilt helemaal af te werken. Zo kun je meteen al aan de slag en wie weet hangt de quilt deze winter al aan de muur!

Before you get started you need to download the instructions below (click on the language you prefer). The pattern contains a list of requirements, instructions on making the blocks and top, and general instructions to finish the quilt. This way, you can get started right away and hopefully finish your quilt before the start of the winter season.

Restjes... en een tipje van de sluier...

Velen van jullie wachten ongeduldig tot vrijdag, wanneer het Winter In Blogland quilt project van start gaat. Ondanks dat ik dit leuke project graag meteen al met jullie zou willen delen, moeten jullie nog 2 nachtjes wachten. Ik kan wel al vertellen dat je 50 x 110 cm ecru achtergrondstof nodig hebt voor de stitcheryblokken. Dus, zoek in je voorraad naar een leuk stofje (ik weet zeker dat je nog wel wat moois hebt liggen. Zo niet, dan is het een mooi excuus om nog eens naar de quiltwinkel te gaan), en aftellen maar, naar 28 september!

Many of you are waiting impatiently for the start of the Winter In Blogland quilt project. Although I would love to share this charming project with you right away, you'll have to wait 2 more nights. All I can tell you is that you'll need 50 cm x 110 cm of ecru background fabric for the stitchery blocks. So pick a lovely fabric from your stash (I bet you'll find some nice fabric there. If not, it's a great excuse to visit your local shop), and lets count down 'till September 28!

In de tussentijd ben ik bezig geweest aan mijn piramidequilt. Verschillende restjes van de Winter In Blogland quilt zijn hier al in gebruikt. Welke? Prachtige stofjes van Blackbird Designs. Had je anders verwacht? ;o)

In the meanwhile, I've been working on my pyramid quilt. Several scraps of the Winter In Blogland quilt have already been used in the pyramid blocks. Which ones? Lovely fabrics by Blackbird Designs. What else did you expect? ;o)

"Winter in Blogland"...

Vorig jaar kwamen Mams en ik op het idee om een nieuw, gratis project te ontwerpen, omdat we zoveel leuke reacties hebben gekregen op de Country Calendar BOM en de Cat Quilt BOS. Maar, deze keer wilden we het anders doen.
Dus vroegen we 4 zeer getalenteerde quiltsters, om samen met ons aan dit project te werken. En, ze zeiden allemaal meteen 'ja'! Brieven en stoffen werden verstuurd naar Nederland, Duitsland en Spanje en een paar maanden later ontvingen we prachtige blokken terug.

Last year Mams and I came up with the idea for a new free project, since so many of you have enjoyed the Country Calendar BOM and the Cat Quilt BOS. But, this time, we wanted to do something different.
So we asked 4 ladies, all very talented quilters, to join us in this project. And they all said 'yes'! Letters and fabrics were send to The Netherlands, Germany and Spain, and a few months later, we received the most lovely blocks.

Het wordt een gezellige winterquilt, met 4 middenblokken en 4 hoekblokken, elk gemaakt in stitchery. Ook de instructies voor het maken van de quilt ontbreken natuurlijk niet.

- 5 oktober: blok 2 - Quilt House (Inés & Marta)

It's going to be a lovely winter quilt, containing 4 centre blocks and 4 corner blocks all made in stitchery, as well as instructions on how to finish the quilt.
