Randje 5...

Op zaterdag 14 mei stond er in grote letters 'EUROVISIE SONGFESTIVAL' in mijn agenda. Ik hecht niet veel belang aan het wedstrijd-idee en de puntentelling (en ik wist niet dat Australië in Europa lag?... Het was trouwens wel één van de beste liedjes!), ik luister gewoon graag naar de muziek en vind het prachtig om te zien hoe ieder land zijn eigen interpretatie geeft aan de show.

Saturday May 14, 'EUROVISION SONG CONTEST' was written in large letters on my calendar. I don't especially like the contest-part (and didn't know Australia was part of Europe?... Really great song though!), but I do love to hear all the different songs and see the act each country performs. 

Er zou iets goed mis zijn met mij als ik 4 uur televisie zou kijken zonder ondertussen nog iets te doen. Mijn 'Randje' was een prima werkje om die avond mee aan de slag te gaan: klein, simpel en klaar in een paar uur. Dus werden na het avondeten eerst de voorbereidingen gedaan...

There would be something wrong with my if I watched television for 4 hours without working on a project. My 'Randje' looked like something easy, which I could finish in a couple of hours, so the early evening was spend making preperations...

De lapjes komen weer allemaal uit de voorraad. De gele is een oudje van Debbie Mumm, waar ik nog bijna een hele fat quarter van vond! Die is al zeker 15 jaar oud denk ik, maar de kleur is zo mooi! Helemaal perfect voor de bloemknoppen. 

The fabrics are all scraps. The yellow one is an old Debbie Mumm fabric of which I found a nearly untouched fat quarter! It must be over 15 years old, but it's a lovely color, so perfect for these flower buds. 

De applicaties heb ik met een festonsteekje vastgezet, met telkens 1 draadje van mijn favoriete DMC garens. Ik heb maar weinig verschillende kleuren garens in huis, maar welke stof ik ook kies, ze passen er altijd wel bij!

The appliqué is finished with a blanket stitch, using 1 thread of my favorite DMC colors. I have only a limited number of embroidery threads, but whatever fabrics I choose, they always seem to work. 

En nog wat lentelapjes voor de randen. Herken je de groene? Die heb ik al gebruikt in mijn Willow Cottage quiltje, en de roze is de rand van mijn Household Angel. De blauwe was een cadeautje van mijn lieve vriendin Gerd en heb ik al eerder gebruikt in een mini quiltje voor de Club. Zo leuk om er nu hele andere combinaties mee te maken!

And some Spring fabrics for the borders. You can recognize the green one from my Willow Cottage quilt, the pink one from the Household Angel border and the blue one was a gift from my dear friend Gerd. I used it before in a mini quilt for the Club. I love how they make a whole new combination now!

En dit is het resultaat! Het is heel vrolijk, zo onder het donkerdere sneeuwmanblok, maar ik vind het contrast wel leuk en ondanks dat ik het lachend wel eens een 'rommeltje' noem, vind ik wel dat die verschillende blokken en lapjes een gezellig geheel vormen. 

 

And here's the result! It's really bright and sunny beneath the snowman, but I like the contrast and somehow, these different blocks and fabrics do make a lovely whole. 

Hij is al te groot om fatsoenlijk in zijn geheel op de foto te gaan. Volgende keer maar eens iets beters bedenken ;o)

Mijn quilt met de Randjes...

Sinds april 2015 sturen we Randjes naar al onze klanten. Een Randje is een gratis patroontje dat meegestuurd wordt met je bestelling. Elk kwartaal ontwerpen en maken we een nieuw Randjespatroon. Je kunt ze verzamelen en het leuke is dat je helemaal zelf kunt kiezen wat je ervan maakt.

In April 2015, we started sending Randjes to all of our customers. A 'Randje' (or 'border' in English) is a free pattern that comes along with your order. Each quarter, we design and send a new Randje pattern. They're fun to collect and it's all up to you how to use them.

De Randjes kunnen bijvoorbeeld als stitchery of applicatiepatroon gebruikt worden voor een mini quiltje of voor een rand rond een grotere quilt. Maar sommige Randjes kunnen ook gebruikt worden als quiltpatroon. Er schuilt geen 'groter plan' achter, het zijn gewoon leuke, onafhankelijke patroontjes, dus geen nood als je er een mist!

The Randjes can, for example, be used as a stitchery or appliqué pattern for a mini quilt or as a border for a large quilt. But some of them can also be used as a quilting pattern. There's no 'bigger plan', they're just fun, independent designs, so no worries if you miss one!

Het heeft even geduurd voor ik er zelf helemaal uit was wat ik nu eigenlijk met mijn Randjes wilde doen. Ik wilde ze verzamelen in één quilt, dat wist ik al. Ik wist ook dat ik mijn restjes wilde gebruiken (echt, weet iemand hoe je die kunt OPgebruiken? Mijn restjes lijken zich elke keer als ik er naar kijk weer te hebben vermenigvuldigd!).

It took me a while to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with my Randjes. I wanted to collect them in one large quilt, that I knew. I also knew I wanted to use my scraps (really, does anyone know how to get rid of those? The scraps do seem to have multiplied every time I look at them!).

Ik kwam uiteindelijk op dit eenvoudige, maar leuke idee. Mijn blokjes zijn 10 x 20 cm, excl. naad (je kunt het patroon vergroten tot de afmeting die jij wil), en ik heb bovenaan en aan de zijkanten een strookje van 2,5 cm breed genaaid. Zo samen ziet het er gezellig en kleurrijk uit!

I finally came up with this really easy but fun solution. My finished blocks measure 10 cm x 20 cm (you can enlarge the pattern any size you want), and I have added 2,5 cm strips to the top and both sides. Sewn together, this will look really colorful!

Ik heb al vaker met restjes gewerkt, maar ik blijf het speciaal vinden, omdat er aan die restjes zoveel herinneringen verbonden zijn. Zo heb ik voor de Randjes al stoffen gebruikt uit mijn Holldiedollie quilt, Angel quiltjes, Sparkle, Welcome en Ile aux Feurs. Herken je ze?

It's not that I haven't worked with scraps before, but I still find it special to use scraps, since they bring along so much memories of older quilts. I have already used fabrics from my Holliedollie quilt, Angel Quilts, Sparkle, Welcome and Ile aux Fleurs. Do you recognize them?

Ik weet nog niet hoe groot ik de quilt wil maken of hoeveel Randjes ik zal ontwerpen. Dat zal zichzelf wel uitwijzen.

I haven't decided yet on how large I will make this quilt or how many Randjes I will design. We'll see, I bet I will all figure that out along the way.

En na deze schattige sneeuwman is het tijd om Randje 5 te ontwerpen. Hmmm, wat zal ik deze keer maken?

Aan de slag met Randje 4...

Gisteravond ben ik begonnen aan mijn vierde Randje. En omdat het buiten nog altijd lente lijkt, breng ik er binnen sfeer in met wat quilterige sneeuw!
Ik heb intussen ook bedacht hoe ik mijn Randjes aan elkaar wil zetten en hoe ik dat kan doen met restjes, maar daarover later meer.

PS. Randjes zijn gratis patronen die je meegestuurd krijgt met je bestelling. Van 1 januari tot en met 31 maart 2016 ontvang je Randje 4. Je kunt de patroontjes gebruiken voor stitchery, applicatie en/of doorquilten of om eens een nieuwe techniek uit te proberen. Je kunt er mini quiltjes van maken of één grotere quilt, wat je zelf wilt!

Yesterday evening, I started working on my 4th Randje. And because outside it still looks like Spring, I thought we could do with some quilted snow instead!
I have also figured out how I want to sew my Randjes into one quilt using my scraps, but more on that later.

PS. Randjes (borders) are free patterns which you receive with your order. You will receive the Randje 4 pattern with orders placed between January 1 and March 31, 2016. You can use the patterns for appliqué, stitchery and/or quilting, or to try a new technique. You can make them into mini quilts or one large quilt, as you prefer! 

'Randje 2'...

Na Randje 1, waarvan je het gratis patroontje van april tot en met juni met je bestelling meegestuurd kreeg, is het nu tijd voor een nieuw Randje.

After Randje 1, which was the free pattern with you order from April - June, it's time for a new Randje.

Terwijl ik de achtergrondstof vanachter de geappliceerde harten van het Mini Quilt Club patroon van juli wegknipte (zie website, nieuwsbrief of later op mijn blog), vond ik het jammer om vier perfecte hartvormige stofjes weg te gooien.
En dus bedacht ik dat ik ze prima kon gebruiken voor Randje 2.

While cutting away the background fabric from behind the appliquéd hearts in the July Mini Quilt Club pattern (see website, newsletter or later on my blog), I thought it a pity to throw away four perfectly good heart shaped pieces of fabric.
And so I decided to use them in Randje 2.

Omdat er zo veel verschillende manieren zijn om te appliceren, heb ik vier verschillende technieken in dit blok gebruikt. Het geruite hart is geappliceerd met freezer paper, de andere drie heb ik eerst met vliesofix op de ecru stof gestreken en dan vastgezet met een whip stitch, raw edge applicatie en een festonsteek.

Since there are so many different techniques to appliqué, I used four in this block. The checkered heart is appliqued using freezer paper, the other three are ironed to the ecru fabric using double sided interfacing (vliesofix) and then secured with a whip stitch, raw edge appliqué and a blanket stitch.

Nog wat stitchery, de letters 'LOVE' en een knoop voor de finishing touch en ik ben blij met mijn tweede Randje. We sturen je dit patroon gratis mee met elke bestelling, tot en met 30 september. Daarna is het weer tijd voor een volgend Randje.

'Randje 1'...

Er is de laatste tijd zoveel gebeurd hier, dat ik helemaal nog niet heb vertel over het nieuwe project dat we gestart zijn. Hoog tijd dus om even bij te praten!

So much has been going on over here that I almost forgot to tell you about the new free project we've started. So lets catch up on that first!

De afgelopen paar jaar hebben we met elke bestelling een gratis patroontje meegestuurd op het begeleidende briefje. Ik heb hiervan zelf vier mini quiltjes gemaakt. Nu dat die klaar zijn (oeps, ook die heb ik nog helemaal niet laten zien. Dat zal ik doen bij het begin van elk seizoen!), was het tijd voor iets nieuws.

Over the last couple of years, we send a free seasonal pattern with each order. I made these stitscheries into four mini quilts. Now that they are finished (I realize I haven't shown you the final results of the Summer, Autum and Winter quilts yet, I'll promise to do that with every new season!) I thought it was time for something new.

Ons nieuwe project heet 'Randjes'.
Elke 3 maanden is er een nieuw patroon beschikbaar, dat je gratis met je bestelling meegestuurd krijgt. Elk patroon is een Randje, dat je kunt gebruiken als applicatie- of stitcherypatroon of soms ook als quiltpatroon. Aan jou de keus!

Our new project is called 'Randjes' ('borders'). 
Every 3 months a new free pattern is available, which you will receive with your order. Each pattern is a Randje, which you can use as a stitchery or appliqué pattern, or sometimes even as a quilting pattern, as you prefer! 

Ik heb de mijne vergroot naar 10 x 20 cm en ik ga alle Randjes samenvoegen in een grotere quilt. Voor mijn eerste Randje heb ik gekozen voor 'raw edge' applicatie, gecombineerd met stitchery. Die 'raw edge' applicatie wilde ik eigenlijk al veel langer eens proberen en dit blok was het perfecte excuus om er nu echt eens mee aan de slag te gaan!
Het is nog maar een beginnetje, maar ik ben blij met het resultaat tot hier toe. Oh, en stel je voor hoe leuk dit patroontje zou zijn als rand rond een quilt?!

I enlarged mine up to 10 cm x 20 cm and I will use all Randjes to make a larger quilt later. My first Randje is going to be raw edge appliqué combined with stitchery. I've never tried raw edge appliqué before, but I wanted to give it a try and this block was just the perfect excuse!
It's just a start, but I love the result! Wouldn't this look great as a border for a quilt aswell?

We zijn in april met de randjes begonnen, dus als je even meetelt, weet je meteen dat juni de laatste maand is waarin Randje 1 verstuurd zal worden. Vanaf juli starten we met Randje 2.
De Randjes zullen niet als patroon te koop zijn of komen, dus als je ze allemaal wilt verzamelen, vergeet dan zeker niet voor 30 juni een patroon naar keus te bestellen en Randje 1 komt gratis mee jouw kant op!
