Some time ago, I wrote that I had hand basted the Winter In Blogland quilt using wooden boards. I saw this technique on youtube, where Sharon Schamber clearly explains how to hand baste a quilt while sitting at the table (no more sour knees and a painful back!). You can find the videos here (part 1) and here (part 2). Even if you don't speak English, these videos show it really clearly!

I adjusted the method a bit, just because I like to do things in my own way ;o) I started wrapping the backing of the quilt, followed by the top. I like to tape the backing and the quilt to the wooden board so everything will surely stay in place while wrapping the quilt around the boards. This time, I used small boards, because it's only a small quilt, but you can use wider boards if you prefer.

While basting, I make sure all layers lie flat on the table. I like to use a curved needle, because with each stitch it comes back up automatically. It's way easier then a regular needle and I couldn't do without it!

Fijne dag!

Now basting a quilt always was and will be a boring job, but this way it's way more comfortable then basting a quilt on the floor. Although I must say I usually stick to that method for smaller quilts, because it's done faster than the method with the boards. I guess everything has it's pro's and contra's.

Have a nice day!

Holland... waterland...

Last Summer, my colleague gave me a gift certificate for a cycling tour with dinner afterwards in the Alblasserwaard. Due to circumstances, we only went yesterday. But we couldn't have picked a better day. Wearing a warm winter coat and mittens, we took our bikes and enjoyed cycling in the lovely Autumn sun.

While cycling we saw a lot, really a lot of water, which is so typical for this region. I didn't stop too many times to take photo's, we just enjoyed the view while on our way.

We stopped in the lovely old fortified town of Gorinchem. Look at those beautiful buildings. I especially love the many stained glass windows, like here in the 16th century tollbooth and the lovely houses in the centre of the town. Some of these houses have names, like this one, although the origin of this name ("In den Blauwe Hoed") remains unknown.

I think a sunny Autumn day is the perfect day for a walk or to cycle. Look at the beautiful brown, orange, green and red colors in the leaves of these chestnut trees. Don't they just create the perfect autumny pictures?

Our last stop was at Kinderdijk. Eventhough I'm from Holland I don't remember visiting there before. I was amazed to see so many windmills so close to eachother. Although it's a beautiful sight, the windmills were build not for beauty, but out of necessity to keep the lands dry and drain the water from the ditches to the nearby river.

Zo'n prachtig zicht!

The windmills were glowing in the late afternoon sunlight. Such an amazing sight!

Dankjewel Carolien, voor dit mooie cadeau! We hadden een gezellige dag!

Thank you Carolien, for this lovely gift! We had a great day!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 5

After layering the quilt, the quilting fun could begin! When I just started quilting, I really hated that part. I had problems getting my stitches even and in the right direction, and I never seemed to make a lot of progress...

But a few years ago, all of a sudden I got the hang of it. I even like it so much that since then, all my quilts are quilted thoroughly.

As for the Winter In Blogland, I choose to quilt just around the inside of the centre and corner blocks. Diamonds in the sashings, a lovely wreath in the blue border (I love how this turned out!) and some 'dinnerware designs' in the flying geese borders.

I usually don't remove the basting threads while quilting, but since I basted differently this time (using the method with the wooden laths), I decided to try cutting away the threads before quilting and I must say it worked out just fine, although I don't mind leaving the threads untill I finished quilting either.

This week it's time for the first of four corner blocks. Els did a great job, designing this lovely mini Christmas tree. You can download this week's pattern from the Bobbin blog.

Attention: somehow there are problems downloading the pattern from Els' blog. Click here to download the pattern of block 5.

Happy stitching!

"All quiet at the quilting front..."

After preparing most of my quilts last weekend, I must admit, I haven't made a stitch. Since last weekend, all 3 of us (that means me, Philippe and our cat Thijs), aren't feeling well. I guess it's the Autumn flu, which almost everyone seems to be suffering from. In case of Thijs, it's still the consequence of the cat flu he had when he was a kitten, and which will not go away, but in case of Philippe and me, I hope we will be feeling well again soon. I hate hanging around, doing nothing...

Have a nice day and take care of yourself!

Net zoals Jane...

In between finishing the top of my snowman quilt, I took my block book and started sewing the next blocks of my Dear Jane quilt. Now that I've started working on it again, I don't want to loose the good vibes ;o)

Some of the patterns in the book are different from the original blocks, like block G-12 Gloriae. I like to make my quilt look as much as possible like the orginal one, so I changed the pattern to look like Janes block. This time, I think it only made the block easier to sew (no, it's not appliquéd!) then as given in the book. Therefore, Gloriae was finished in no time.

The same applies for block H-12, Hannah Lou's Hearts. Jane didn't appliqué hearts, but 'drops', which together look like hearts. I love this green fabric and it looks great in this block.

Fijne zondag!

Just one more block to go, before it's time for, what I think is one of the most interesting block in the quilt...

Have a nice Sunday!

Another quilt I'm preparing this weekend, is my snowman quilt.

The scrappy border turned out just fine. It gives the quilt this cozy, wintery look. But the top is not yet finished. I designed a lovely appliqué border which will add more charm to the quilt.

Fijn weekend!

So today I will take out my fabrics again, cut the templates and iron the appliqué parts to the second border. Again some preparations to be done... a perfect way to spend my Saturday!

Have a nice weekend!

Winter In Blogland - Blok 4

We hope you're all enjoying working on the Winter In Blogland quilt!
I sure did! Especially receiving all blocks and admiring the lovely work all designers did was so much fun. It was nice to see how all designers had made blocks which all reflect their own style, but which combine very well in one quilt.

It was a bit of a puzzle to find the perfect balance in the quilt: which block should be placed where... After placing and re-placing the blocks, I settled on this lay-out. I think all blocks come out well.

When the top was finished, I layered the quilt and basted it. This time, I used the method with the wooden laths, which worked out just fine. It definately saved me a painful back and sour knees ;o)

Today it's time for block 4. Already the last of the centre blocks, which means we're halfway! Jacqueline has designed a lovely, wintery block which makes me long for low temperatures and lots of snow! It's been a long time since I went skating, but who knows, maybe this year...

Last week Natascha asked me if I had more then 24 hours in a day, since she thougt I was quite a productive quilter. Now, I wish I had, but just like yours, my days count just 24 hours, not a minute more. Since I have a regular 40-hours-a-week job, and I try to run a household (on which I often refer to this quilt I designed :o) ), quilting is limited to the evenings and weekends.

One often says 'well begun is half done', and I totally agree on that. Therefore I try to prepare my projects during the weekends, when I can work on them by day. I cut templates and fabrics, I baste quilts, I find matching quilting- and embroidery threads,... This way, I save time by having to grab all my materials and clear them away again just once, and I can pick up a project during the week and get started right away.

Since I have two days off of work now, I decided to start my prolongued weekend by cutting templates and fabrics for some new Dear Jane blocks. I totally got the hang of it again, since I finished another block last weekend. I forgot how much fun it was to work on those small blocks and to see the quilt grow bit by bit.

My blocks are all stored in my block book, ready to get started on. What are your plans for today?

Happy stitching!

'n Ouwetje...

We have to go back to Spring 2009, when I chose these fabrics to start a new quilt.

I loved all fabrics, for one: the greenish one, with the multi colored flowers on it. Brrrr... I thought it was a really ugly fabric and the reason I had it was no other then because it was in a scrap bag I  bought...

But actually, the fabric doesn't deserve to be called ugly, because it actually is the key to the quilt. Because it contains so many colors, it needs to be added, to combine all the other fabrics. On top of that, it's a real eyecatcher, which makes the quilt more interesting to look at. And doesn't one say that each beautiful quilt needs to contain at least one 'ugly' fabric?

I loved appliquéing the centre of the quilt, especially because it has such a lovely, antique look. But the border was also a pleasure to work on. To combine all these lovely fabrics in a 'scrappy' border was so much fun!

A label with my name, the year and the name of the quilt on the back and voila... my 'antique' flower quilt was finished.

It measures 82 cm x 92 cm and it's called 'Ode To Simplicity', just because beautiful things don't need to be complicated...

En last but not least een close up van het 'lelijke' stofje.

Fijne dag!

And last but not least a close up with the 'ugly' fabric. I love the way it turned out in the quilt. Actually, I must admit, I went back to the shop, to buy some more of it. Because if it's true that a beautiful quilt needs to contain one ugly fabric, I'm settled for my next few quilts ;o)

Have a nice day!

F-12 Starburst...

Yesterday, I spend the afternoon working on the border of my snowman quilt. But in the evening, it had to make place for another quilt: my Dear Jane. I needed to make only a few more stitches to finish another block. I'm glad that after 7 months, I finally fineshed a new block.

Of geappliceerd misschien?

Block F-12 Starburst was quite a puzzle to me. I couldn't figure out how Jane had made the block with the inward seams in the ecru parts. Did she patch it? Did she appliqué? I finally settled on appliquéing the green triangles onto the ecru fabric. This way it's done neatly, without the fabrics stretching in ways they mustn't.

Fijne zondag!

The next block will be G-12 Gloriae, a lovely block which looks like quite a challenge... Hopefully this block will be made a bit sooner then block F-12 ;o)

Have a nice Sunday!

'n Weekendwerkje...

Music on, a big cup of tea within reach and many scrappy blocks to sew. A perfect way to spend the weekend!
