'n Speciaal blokje...

While sewing the pyramid blocks together, I came across a very special block. At first sight, there's nothing unusual or different about this pyramid. Just like the others, it contains scraps from other quilts, reminding me of the quilts I've made.

The bottom layer is a lovely brown fabric from Moda (just like all other layers, which really is a coincidence). It's a lovely striped brown from the Beach House series. I've used it in one of my favorite quilts, 'Ode To Simplicity'. Despite the simple pattern, I really love this quilt and I display it each Summer. The appliquéd centre is made with a blanket stitch, and the Log Cabin border gives the quilt an antique look. By the way, I think the fabric I used for the flowers is really, really ugly. It's some sort of brown with different colored flowers on it. But, it does fit in very well in this quilt and I think it's this ugly fabric that gives the quilt this beautiful look!

The second layer is a green fabric, from the Patisserie series by Fig Tree. I've bought a lot of this fabric, since I used it for the 'Île aux Fleurs - Collection' quilts. I've used it for stems, borders, bindings and pillows, and I still have fabric left! Now, this one also gets a place in my 'quilt of memories'.

The middle layer is a lovely fabric which I bought back in 2008 (wow, that's already 4 years ago, time flies!). If I remember well, it's actually a Christmas fabric, but with the green leaves and berries, I think it fits well for every season. I used this fabric in 'Flora's Secret', one of the first quilts I made using the stitchery technique. Although I was not easy to get all the stitches right at once (I did have some problems with the satin stitch - it's not my favorite...), I did get hooked on stitchery!

The fourth layer of fabric is a scrap from a Christmas quilt, called 'Joyful', which I made from a Charm Pack. It's a strange color, some sort of dirty ecru, which I definately wouldn't buy without a specific project in mind, but it does fit in well with the other colors (both in the Joyfull quilt as in this pyramid).

And finally the top of this pyramid is made from some leftover fabric from the Garden Angel kits. It's a lovely, bright red fabric, with tiny dark red twigs on it. It's gorgious and it does brighten up the quilt.

Now, what's so special about this block? You might remember I started working on my pyramid quilt in France. The first blocks were made at the the foot of a very special mountain, rising high above the surrounding hills. The Mont Ventoux therefore couldn't miss in my quilt. Bottom up, the mountain/block starts with a layer of earth at the bottom, then green trees, followed by bushes that become more rare when you climb higher and higher. The top looks like a moon landscape: it's covered in light brown rocks, and because of the micro climate, almost no plants grow here. And then finally, the red triangle in my block represents the weather station, which is on the top of the mountain and has a high, red and white mast.

While all other blocks are assembled at random, I do think this block can't miss in my quilt. It's a memory of how I started this quilt and I want to keep this special memory along with the others.

Now on with some randomly chosen blocks! I've finished almost 3/4 of the blocks, so it's time to sew some more blocks to the top.

In the meanwhile, I've been working on my 'In The Fields' quilt. I've quilted many butterflies and I'm almost halfway the border. Because of the dark color of the border fabric, I can only quilt in the weekends, when there's daylight. The dark fabric makes it hard to work with by lamp light.

When I just started quilting, I didn't like it at all. It was hard to get each stitch right (not too big, not too small and all pointing in the right direction). I decided I didn't really like quilting, and I focused on patchwork, quilting only as much as necessary to hold the 3 layers together. Only a few years ago I made a switch and all of a sudden I really started to like the quilting part as well. Maybe it was because I finally got the trick of making the stitches correctly at once, I'm not sure, but I do know that all of a sudden I prefered to quilt beautiful figures in my quilts instead of just some straight lines 'in the ditch'.

Now of course, quilting a quilt thoroughly gives a beautiful result, but, a 'quilt finger' is an inevoidable consequence: the skin on my left index finger is frayed from making all those tiny stitches. A quilt finger sure is a way to recognize a quilter! Although it might not look so pretty, I really don't mind. Because a frayed index finger is the sign of a happy quilter! ;o)

'n Beetje creativiteit...

Thijs is (as usual...) sleeping next to the central heating, Philippe is giving a weekly football training, and I have cleaned the dishes, washed the bathroom towels and cleaned the living room. Now it's time to sit down and quilt.

Two more blocks of my Dear Jane quilt are ready to be shown. Don't they look lovely, made out of the right fabric? ;o) The first block is block C-12 Family Reunion, consisting 49 pieces of fabric, all assembled in this tiny block.

Happy stitching!

The second block is called D-12 Crossed Swords and it consists of less pieces, but, with the sharp Y-seam, it wasn't easier then C-12 at all! I started piecing the red squares into the white 'sword', but after one seam, I decided this wasn't the right way to do it at all... I really didn't feel like cutting the pieces a third time, so I appliqued the rest of the square and I must say it turned out quite well! Let's just say that there is a creative solution to every problem ;o)

Happy stitching!

'n Vroege ochtend...

It's early morning, and the world is still asleep. I like to wake up early and start the day before everyone else does. I wake up at 6, give Thijs his breakfast, take a shower and have my own breakfast (which I can't leave ungarded, because there's a furry friend who Loves butter, LOL). The only sounds I hear come from Thijs (he's snoring near the central heating) and some crows that are playing outside. For me, this is the perfect, quiet way to start the day.

After breakfast, I sit down to quilt. Well, only in the weekend, because during the week I have to hurry to get to work. I'm feeling a little bit better: the antibiotics, nasal spray and steam treatment seem to do their job, so I'm hoping to feel less limp today.

I've prepared some new building materials for the pyramids, which are growing in number fast. That's no wonder, because I love working on these cute blocks! I see a fabric from an old Debbie Mumm quilt, one from my Dear Jane quilt and another one from my Bella Notte quilt.

Fijne zondag!

This quilt started just as a project to keep me busy while on holiday, but I seem to be not the only one who's addicted to this cute block. I received many nice comments, like from Gerd from Belgium, who spend a whole afternoon cutting templates from fabrics given by members from her quilting bee. She will start sewing next Fall, when she travels to Guatemala. It's a perfect project to bring along on a trip and it will be a special quilt, with all those fabrics given to her by dear friends.
And Jennifer from Texas send me this mail:

I just wanted to tell you I love your quilt! I don't know how you have the patience!
I have been making some pyramid blocks, my husband cut me some wooden templetes for them and I work a little at a time.
unfortunately the new puppy got a hold of the wood and ate it!! now he has to make me a new one again!

Thanks for sharing ladies, I love to read your stories! Working on this quilt 'together' makes it even more special. I don't want to bore you with deep thoughts on an early morning, but I do find it wonderful how quilting unites people from all around the world, and how it creates special friendships!

Have a nice Sunday!

Sukkelen...

Today, I have not so much to show you. I've sewn some white pyramids to the colored ones, so I can sew them together later. There are still many pyramids to be made, but there are plenty of scraps left to do so.

The reason that I didn't do much quilting, is because I'm still ill. Another visit to the doctor learned that I have a sinusitis, which causes a oppressed feeling and a terrible headache. I have 3 different kinds of medicines and though they should start making me better, I still feel worse everyday. I do hope to feel better soon, because since the illness started 7 weeks ago, I feel, as we say in Dutch, like a dish cloth...

Although quilting might not cure me, sewing those lovely fabrics together does make me feel a little bit better ;o)

'n Heleboel sneeuwmannen...

Usually, I never make the same project twice, but this time, I made an exception. ZusJe is very fond of the Snow Guys and since she's not a quilter herself... yes, it's up to me ;o)

But I don't mind, because I really like making these white, fluffy guys. I started working on the first one. called James.

Mams is a huge snowman fan too. She's making her own version of the Snow Guys: instead of 3 photo frames, she's putting them together in a mini quilt.

As usual, she doesn't tell me anything, so I'm really curious to seeing her finished quilt! She gave me a little sneak peek of her snowman so far.

Fien has finished her version of the Snow Guys. It's her first time to appliqué and she has done a fantastic job! Look at her lovely snowman:

Hallo Ellen,

Last, but not least, Hélène has been working on some snowman too. This is her beautiful version of the 'In The Meadow...' mini quilt. Thanks for sharing ladies!

Hello dear Ellie,
how are you ?

I just finish the last mini-quilt ! I used Debbie Mumm fabrics. Thank you very much for all your designs.

amicalement,
bisous,
Hélène

Felle kleuren...

January last year, I received these lovely fabrics from The Log Cabin's Fabric Club. Mostly, I prefer more 'powdered' colors, but I fell in love with these bright colors and cheerful prints immediately.

Maybe you know the feeling, or maybe you're more disciplined then I am, but I just had to make a quilt with these fabrics and I had to start right away (so far for last years New Years Resolution of not starting too many new projects. Yes, it lasted not even a month... ;o)

Together with some extra fabric I ordered for the border and binding, these fabrics resulted in a cute mini quilt, called 'Love'. I wanted to make a simple heart quilt for quite some time, and these fabrics just seemed perfect for it.

By the way, the doll in the pictures is called Miepie (pronounced as Meepee). I used to play with her for hours and hours when I was a little girl. Over the past 10 years I have moved several times and Miepie got lost. Maybe I accidentaly misplaced her, and she had ended up with the trash instead of the moving boxes... You might think she is 'just a doll', but to me, she a real childhood treasure. But last year, while cleaning the attick, Mams retrieved Miepie, and I'm happy to have her back!

Back to the fabrics ;o) Of course, I only had to use small pieces of fabric for the mini quilt. Still forgetting about my New Years Resolutions (you probably see why I didn't make any Resolutions this year!) I designed a new block and quilt, and got started.

However, working on too many projects makes me feel restless, and so I put some projects on hold, including this one. But somehow, since a few months, I'm in a finishing mood. Really, it sounds a bit scary to me too, because I'm more the starting-many-projects-and-finishing-not-so-many type of person, but I do try to make the most out of it, and finish a few of my UFO's.

So now I picked up this project again. All blocks are cut and ready to sew. I even made 2 blocks back then and the result is lovely. So who knows, maybe this one will be an AFFO soon. The scraps of the Love quilt have been used in my Pyramid Quilt already, I hope to add the scraps of this quilt too!

Over een 'trip around the world' en verkeerde stoffen...

After finishing the 100th block of my Dear Jane quilt, I prepared 3 new blocks: B-12, C-12 and D-12. Well, at least I thought I prepared these blocks...

But look what happened. After block B-12, I accidentaly skipped the pattern of C-12, and cut blok D-12 out of the fabric I wanted to use for block C-12, and the same with the next block...

The original Dear Jane quilt is build up as a 'trip around the world'. Although I want to make my own version of the quilt and do I use different colors and fabrics than Jane did, I do follow the trip around the world pattern.

And so, both blocks had to be re-cut, or the pattern would be disrupted. Luckily, I didn't start piecing, so the fabrics could be replaced easily. I do have to pay a little more attention next time ;o)

Bouwen...

Everyone in blogworld is building... I too, though I'm not building houses, but pyramids.

Over the years I have collected many scraps, all saved well in a large box. Last Summer, while on a holiday in the South of France, I started a new quilt, using up my scraps and sewing many memories into a warm quilt. The first blocks were made just to keep myself busy, but it turned out to be such a nice project. Since then, over 150 pyramids have been build, and I've cut fabrics for many more.

The plan was not to sew too many blocks together, because new scraps from other projects are added almost every week, and I want to mix older and newer fabrics in the quilt. But I am too curious, and I thought assembling a few rows of blocks wouldn't hurt anyone ;o)

So this is what it will look like. Well, sort of, because of course there will be much more pyramids when finished. I've sewn the pyramids into rows of 18 pyramids, so that the length of each row will be 180 cm. The ends of the rows are made with half pyramids, to make a square quilt in the end. I simply used the pyramid pattern and cut it in half, for the white blocks, aswell for the scrappy ones.

In the meanwhile, I do love to use all these fabrics again. I remember making my first quilt, aswell as the Rudolf quilt I made for my sister and finished just before Christmas. There even are some scraps of quilts that I'm still working on. Over 16 years of my own quilt 'history' gathered in one quilt. It's such a precious quilt already!

It started back in 2007, when I found the perfect fabrics for a quilt which I wanted to make for several years. It was a large project, so I wanted to be sure the fabrics wouldn't bore me once halfway the quilt. But all of a sudden, the perfect fabrics were right in front of me, and although not planned (I wanted to finish some other projects first), I bought the fabrics, and started working on the quilt.

My intention was to make 2 blocks a week, but since I'm not really good at keeping such intentions, I soon abandoned that plan, and now I make as many blocks as I like, whenever I want to.

To finish this quilt as quick as possible is not my goal. I want to enjoy making every block and every stitch. So long before I started this quilt (and especially when I put the 2-blocks-a-week-resolution aside), I knew it was going to be a multiannual project and I really don't mind.

But I do celebrate a little, today. I just finished the 100th block! I know, there are many more blocks to go, but it does feel like a huge milestone! 100 blocks, each measuring 11,5 x 11,5 cm, containing 2108 pieces in total. I do wonder if I will end up with exactly the same number of pieces as Jane did...

Zo, nu verder met blok 101... Veel quiltplezier!

So, on with block 101... Happy stitching!
